My new flag boy...
« on: January 25, 2005, 05:40:13 am »
I got me a roommate last week -- an eight-week old chocolate lab pup named Ollie.  He's pretty awesome -- already crate and almost completely potty trained in a week and a half (I've been working with him a bunch, and thank god for the Monks' book).  We played fetch for about 1/2 hour today after work and he brought it back every time.  Anyway, I'm pretty proud of the lil' guy.

His father was 100 lbs, and he already has ridiculously long legs for a little pup. So I'm expecting him to be a big one!!

Here are a few pics.

I got a dog a few years ago with dreams of him being a best friend, loyal companion, obedient sidekick, etc...
I also thought he would be great to have along on boating trips to Powell and wherever.
but...
The first time I took him out on the vessel he crapped and puked.  Then he jumped of the bow with his leash on and almost hung himself.  Needless to say, he fulfilled none of my ambitious expectations.  Now I can't figure out how to humanely get rid of him before he dyes every square foot of carpet in my house a light shade of yellow.
But good for you.  I am sure your dog will turn out just fine.

LOL! Thanks for the words of encouragement Festivus!  Actually, a friend of mine has a great dane that he takes out in his Malibu, and the dog is such a pain to have on board that I would never consider it...was only joking about the flag thing.  He'll get to watch from the dock...!

HAH that is so funny Festivus. I am somewhere between you guys, uncommittal total love for my dog and the fact that he is slowly ruining my residence and most valuable posession.

I have a big ass Wiemarauner. He is a total head case. Way too smart, he knows what I'm doing every second and is in my face. He is no good on the boat, he is too big and I hate cutting his nails so he gouges upholstery. Last time we had him out, in the middle of the lake, I Lambed up and threw a ball for him. He got about 20 ft from the boat and did the head spin thing and headed for shore, about 1 mile away. We had to spin the boat around (my wife was on the platform and ended up swimming) and I had to jump in and save his dumb hyperventilating stupid ass. I sure do love him though, every time I come home I spend the first 20 minutes consoling him for being gone.

Well- its been LONG while since anyone has added to this post but got me to thinkin- I went to the local Pound (sorry Animal Shelter for all you Politically Correct) in HUNT for a Wiemareuner but to no avail.  Good to know how they act on boat though cause I plan on my WIEM to be by my side always (except the trips to lake now)... My Lap who was taken over by my parents- IS the Swimmer so i try not to take her anywhere near water as I will end up having to grab her by the collar and lead her out of the water or spend all day chasing after her on shore...
Boating is more then a passion- is a lifestyle.

Well, since I started this post, and the new puppy turned two last month, I figured I'd chime back in.  The last day on the water this season, I taught my dog how to dive underwater off the swimstep -- to chase after a water bottle with 1-2 bubbles of air (just enough to float back to the surface).  Once he actually figured out what I was trying to get him to do, he was able to dive about 4 feet underwater and come up with the bottle in his teeth.  It was definitely a crowd-pleaser.  Until he started peeing and puking all over my carpets.  If I remember correctly, he pee'd three times, and puked twice??  Anyway, he's a great dog and he'll still be out with me next summer.  But no more diving.
