Throttle Problem
« on: July 07, 2020, 01:51:51 am »
Hello fellow Toyota boat owners,

I am hoping this forum of experienced Toyota Epic boat owners may be able to help me.

I have a 21' 1999 Toyota Epic ski boat with a VT300i engine. At the end of last boating season, the throttle suddenly lost power to the engine until the very end of travel, then it would go very slow. I now have my boat in a repair shop to fix this problem, but my mechanic is striking out. In addition to the throttle issue, the engine appears to be in "limp mode". The engine starts and dies over and over, though the fuel pump is running. He has tried two different expensive ODBM readers that don't seem to communicate with the engine.

I read through various forums on this website, one suggested a new Throttle Position Sensor, so my mechanic bought one and installed it but it made no difference.

I have also heard you need a proprietary Toyota marine computer. Would anyone know where I could buy, borrow, or rent one (I live in Seattle, WA)?

I am about to get kicked out of the marine repair shop.  I am looking for someone that can help me trouble-shoot this situation and/or knows a good Toyota boat mechanic I could talk to?

Any help would be appreciated!

Cristy

I have talked to the mechanic but he feels that he knows what he is doing and wants to fix the ecm. Based on your comments it probably is a throttle body.

984318020   Tool,Engine, scan tool Rental 7 days           250.00    35.00
Make payments with PayPal - it's fast, free and secure!
984318020 Deposit   Scan Tool deposit for engine           1000.00

If it is in fault mode it will have codes. No other will read codes.

But you could have issues  if a bad fuel pump. bad ecm, dirty mass air flow sensors, 90 % throttle body.

Hi Capt Rick,
Thank you for the response. My mechanic has not spoken to you but would like to! His name is Matt, I gave him your number off this site: 407-701-4430.

We are in Seattle WA, would the scan tool rental still be an option?

Many thanks,
Cristy

Cristy, I remember a post a while back about the check engine light blinking the codes.  I think it was from Brad who was a Lexus mechanic.

Also in Seattle the shop that sold Epics was Seattle Water Sports, they may still have mechanics that can work on the lexus engines.
