Timing Belt replacement

Any tips advice on this service?
I've seen some old threads with a parts list, is it ok to use generic parts or OEM a must?
Boat has 270hrs on it, it says every 1000hrs or 10 years and i'm guessing its never been replaced.

Got all the parts and took the cover off to get started. I got down to the belt and it looked like brand new so I put it back together. Hopefully it will last another 10 years.

yeah I figured I would take the cover off and give it a look.

If it seems to be in good shape I will put it off till fall/winter

From everything I have read, you can usually expect the belt to be in good/great shape. However, the notorious area of concern is the water pump leaking over time onto the belt causing wear and the potential for failure.

I'm sort of in the same boat as everyone else, 400ish hours and I don't think its ever been done, but its certainly not something I'm really looking forward to tackling if it isn't "necessary".

But, a 20 year old water pump makes me a bit nervous.

If you have done a timing belt service before, it honestly is pretty easy. The toughest part for me was the crank bolt and getting it lose, trying to figure out all the plastic covering and how to line it back up when putting the covers back on.
