I need A new TAC
« on: October 04, 2018, 21:28:41 pm »
Finally my TAC started flaking out.  the rest of the gauges are working ok, well as well as they can in theses boats.   I was going to try to replace it without having to do the whole cluster.  can we still get just the gauge?

pretty sure it is a bad gauge.  it would reset some times to the wrong RPM.  so next time is started it would be at wrong spot.  now the needle just points down.

don't want a huge project just wondering if there is a replacement that I can bolt in

There are replacements available on the parts site IIRC. I'd see if you have a wiring issue such as corrosion first. There are also after market gauges you can install if you are confident cutting into the factory harness. I replaced all of mine with teleflex gauges and have been super happy, they always work :)

do they need anything other than just splicing in the wires?   any mounting hardware?  do they just slide in?  I assume they are the same wires just need to splice them in

I've just recently swapped out my digital for analog gauges in an attempt to fix a overheating indication from my gauges.  In the process, I broke then had to replace the inline fuses (corroded).  I would try that first and see if it corrects the problem.

So the replacement process is fairly easy wiring wise, I have some pictures somewhere of my replacement. Getting the gauges out and back in is a bit of a pain if you don't remove the dash. I did it this way and removed the footrest and drivers seat so that I didn't have to be as much of a contortionist.  When I did my cluster I also ran brand new runs from the battery switch to bus bars under the dash to reduce some of the voltage drop issues our boats have.  If you have the early 7 gauge dash I could probably give you a full parts list. I know others have replaced the gauges in the late model dash, but I don't exactly remember which brand they used, might have been Faria

Below is my parts list reconstructed from the various orders I made. It may not be 100% accurate.

Note that TRD now sells a conversion kit for our boats if you aren't wanting to cut up your factory harness or spend hours crimping and shrinking connectors.

https://www.skiboatpartsonline.com/TRD%20COnversion%20Kit%20-%20Toyota

Gauges

*Sierra 69713P Eclipse Series - 6 Gauge set
*TELEFLEX 781684035P ECLIPSE SPEEDO GPS-35MPH (You may want to purchase the 80 MPH gauge, I used the 35MPH as we use the boat mainly for skiing)
*RS232 SERIAL NMEA 183 GPS RECEIVER (Found on ebay, needed for sierra GPS speedo as it does not have an internal GPS receiver and the sierra branded one is $$$$)

Wire (I purchase from Gregs Marine Wire Supply, wire should be tinned marine grade wire)
*16 GA Red 10ft (gauge power)
*16 GA Black 10ft (gauge grounds)
*16 GA dark blue 10ft (gauge illumination)
*16 GA light blue 5ft (oil pressure)
*16 GA tan 5ft (engine temp)
*16 GA grey 5ft (tach)
*16 GA pink 5ft (fuel gauge)

Connectors (I use ancor for my connectors)
*16-14 GA #8 post size Adhesive heat shrink tinned crimp ring terminals x 40 (gauge connections)
*16-14 GA Adhesive heat shrink butt connectors x 10 (harness splices)
*16-14 Step down heat shrink adhesive butt connectors blue stripe (joining grounds/illumination/power) x 14

Other
Zip ties
Electrical tape
1/2 " wire loom

Tools
Crimp tool
Lighter or hor air gun to shrink connectors

Thanks for helping get this updated

MGA0010911   MDC replacement, 1999 Instrument 7GaugeDash,99,   10    2    749.00    35.

This includes replacing all gauges with analog gauges fitting same holes. Send the old gauges and wire harness and MDC.  I will send back a plug and play.

The tachometer will have a hour meter, the speedometer  will connect to the hoses from transom pick ups. You can also use Phone to get speed!!! The only item missing on all kits is alarm. But I think if you can listen you will know the engine has lost pumping good water flow and the temperature will rise
