I may be buying an Epic FINALLY!
« on: July 12, 2018, 18:15:38 pm »
Hi guys (and gals)... I've been wanting an Epic since they 1st came out and I finally have my chance to own one (SX22). I am going to see it next weekend (its in another state) The motor has just over 800 hours... Being that the motor is a 1UZ I don't think this should be of concern... Amy I wrong? Also, what kind of things should I be checking/looking for? Being that I'm driving over 12 hours one way in my gas guzzling Tundra, I'm 99.9% sure that I'm going to take it home, but what are deal breakers. Supposedly everything works except the heater (don't need because I'm in AZ) eg perfect pass, ballasts, runs and drives great (per owner) It's got cosmetic issues which can be dealt with. Just looking for some insight from the pros.

These boats are pretty rugged, and the engines aren't generally prone to issues if they are well maintained and they weren't run in salt water. The block is aluminum and unless closed cooling is installed it's raw water cooled. With that few hours I'd be surprised if it has issues.

Definitely check all the fluids for water nothing should be milky, run the boat preferably on a trailer with a fake a lake to see if the exhaust headers have issues. There should be no steam and the water exiting the transom should be just a bit warm. The engine should be nearly silent when idling if the boat is in the water. When I bought mine the timing belt was off 5 degrees and it ran rough. Check the rudder for play and also take a peek at the stuffing box. Generally not an issue but it shouldn't be hot after driving the boat. Check the gauges and make sure they work.

The boat is wort the drive. I drove across three states to pick up mine

Thanks for the info... unfortunately, I'll have to use it in the future... the guy sold it today... I was hoping for a miracle as I'm busy as hell at work and had a non refundable VRBO in Oceanside for this weekend... it wasn't meant to be though...I'm waiting for the next sx to come along now. Not settling for anything else  :'(
