Suction Cup Wake Surf Gates
« on: June 27, 2018, 01:50:43 am »
Has anyone tried any of the wakesurf gates with suction cups? (I know there is an older discussion on the Ronix)

I am mainly looking at the Mission and the Swell models. I just want to know if these work with the hull of an Epic SX.

I have used the Mission, it was OK.
I currently use the Nauticurl and it has done the best.

Thanks cdlollar - What specific difference did you see between the Mission and the Nauticurl model? Size of the wake? Placement etc.

Also did you have rear ballast full when testing?

Nauticurl seemed to have larger pocket and a little bit further behind the boat.
I have done allot since then to get the boat to actually produce a decent Surf wake.
1st was to drastically reduce the size of the platform, mine literally is no larger than the mount brackets and raised by 3”.
Today I ran with an additional 1300 lbs of ballast; 400 lbs in the nose and 400 lbs on each side of the motor box.
Tomorrow I am going to play with using 2 Nauticurls to try an move the sweet spot back farther; will try to get some pics.

Is the 2001 SX hull different than the 99 Epic? (I presume so). I tried a Swell a year ago and the suction was bigger than the step of the hull. I think it needed to be less that 4”.

Can’t answer the hull shape difference between the X and SX.

I place the Nauticurl just above the lower shelf with the wedge just in line with the transom.
Here is a video of my niece surfing goofy side, first time ever without the rope.

This was with the setup I mentioned above.
I stacked up 2 Nauticurls and it made the pocket a little better and seemed to give even more push.
Will try to get a video of natural side tomorrow.

We went out yesterday to try out two different wake surf gates - The Swell Wake Surf Creator and the Mission Delta. We had all the ballast (rear lockers, center and a front ballast) filled on our SX and while the boat struggled to get up to speed we got an amazing wake. We keep the boat at Lake Tahoe (6500 feet) so the power band on the Epic is not ideal with all the ballast loaded up.  We also had to remove the deck, since ours is not yet modified.

The results were quite impressive and for the first time my son was able to wake surf without the rope. We are still working on adjusting the placement and settings, but overall very impressed by the wake - video below.

The wake with Swell was just not as good as what we got with the mission.

Nice work Jimbo, I need to put up a pick of my ghetto deck..lol...just some old scrap 2x4 from a packing crate.
I have however recently decidied to sell my boat and get something larger like  22+ V-Drive.
I’ll be listing up here shortly so if you guys know anyone who needs a good solid X22 you will know where to hook them up.

Watch Jimbos video above, he shows where to place. It was the same exact place I was.
