Water coming in

Hi everyone, I seem to have a pretty good leak coming in from the back so I need to pick some brains.  I have recently replaced the rear shaft seal with the dripless system since I know it was leaking from there.  I had the shop replace the packing first and did not go well so they put in the dripless system.  I have checked the rudder, no leak.  I have checked the fresh water intake, no leak.  Cannot see where water is coming in, but seems like it is just rear of the prop shaft.  I have the boat moored and after a couple of days sitting, there is about 10" of water.  Since it comes in when boat is not running, don't think it is anything engine related.  I can only think of 3 points where water can come in, rudder, fresh water intake and shaft.  Any ideas, can't say for sure if it's the shaft or not???  Any help is appreciated.

Dennis, check the fiberglass hood surrounding the shaft coming through the hull.  At one time I had a small leak coming from the stern side of that "hood".  I re-epoxied around with not a problem since.    Just a thought.     99 E22 #9 off the production line in that model.

vdrive exhaust has a collector under engine. Check for water from that and the exhaust transom outlet to engine muffler,


If it leaks sitting it could be that. If it leaks from running do you have a shower? or heater

Hi Capt Rick, can you show me where the exhaust collector and transom outlet are?  I recently had all of the exhaust hoses replaced.  I do have a shower and heater.

I always look for the simple stuff 1st!  Sometimes the sealant on the speedometer pitot tube dries up and water may come in through there.  Also the round gasket on the swim platform light can disintegrate over time and leak water in.  Unless you boat is somewhat heavy in the rear, I don't know that the light would be close enough to the water line to let in water while sitting at the dock.  But I would check these 2 simple things before I went any further.  I agree it has to be coming from the outside of the boat, not from the engine.  10" of water in a couple days is a lot!

Thanks Breakawaydaze, I have check those and all is good.  The rear light does leak small amounts of water, but is above the waterline when sitting at the dock.  This thing is driving me crazy!!!

try in reverse if possible. remove boat out of water and see where water comes out.

under engine is fiberglass muffler adapter

Capt Rick, would it leak very much through fiberglass muffler adapter if it is just sitting moored?

The exhaust outlet at the transom is under water and so is the hose and the muffler and the collector. So yes it will leak while sitting in water

Did it leak before you had all of your exhaust hoses replaced in June?  If it didn't, I would double check the connections.  its pretty thick hose, but if they tightened the clamps with a power drill instead of a screwdriver they may have over tightened and pinched the hose.  If they didn't cut the hose straight, it may look good at the top of the connection but on the underside it doesn't cover the inlet.  Or possibly the clamps are not tight enough.

Another thought (not a good one), have you bumped your skegs / tracking fins on the trailer or on the bottom of the lake?  I have never heard of skegs or tracking fins coming loose, but I guess it is possible.

It did leak some last couple of years, but I never moored it so I didn't know the extent of the leak until now.  I know the shaft packing was one place it was leaking and putting the drip less system in corrected that leak.  I am taking it out of the water tomorrow and will leave some water in to see where it's coming out once on the trailer.  Hoping it's an easy leak to find and an easy fix.  Fingers crossed, lol

Hey Dennis, did you ever find out where the water was entering your boat?

We had a similar problem with ours.  It ended up being the speedometer pickup mounts on the back end of the boat.  Toyota never filled the holes with silicone/caulk.  They just mounted the speedometer pickup and the mount has a little hood on it where the cable goes in...water just streamed in right there.  Filled with silicone/caulk and problem solved.  Caused years of frustration and was so simple.
