Buy an Epic they said!
« on: June 08, 2017, 04:11:28 am »
Hello all!

my names drew and i purchased a 2001 toyota epic last week. I am a huge fan of toyota/lexus (own 2 GS400s and an IS300) and when I found that this boat runs a 1UZ i was sold. I purchased mine for well under 10k and thought the guy selling it really did just buy a brand new boat and that was the reason for sale.. this seems to not be the case.

When I went to go see it, it had its service records and was as clean as it was described on craigslist. The Previous owner had the fake lake set up before I arrived and I was able to start and rev on the boat on the trailer. I did notice the control panel on the left of the wheel was flashing but he said that was an epic thing - as i had seen on the internet. thought all was well and took her home with me.

flash foward to yesterday, I took the boat out to folsom lake here in NOR*CAL and went to fire it while still on the trailer in the water and no dice. boat cranks beautifully but will not fire. I do not believe that I am getting fuel what so ever. I hear nothing in the relays and the pumps are still. Also the panel that was flashing is completely dark at this point. I will plug my OBDII diag tomorrow when I get it to my shop. I have the following planned -
1) make sure obd diag tool can connect to pcm/ecu and pull any codes.
2) check fuel related fuses/relays
3) check for power to Fuel pump

if I draw a blank here I am wondering if that control panel to the left of the wheel has been fried or ? I also have no gauges what so ever so.... im leaning towards ele failure at this point.

Any input or suggestions are greatly welcome.
Thanks and happy boating season!

I havent heard of a no fire case on the boards, however, I'd recommend downloading the engine shop manual fromnthe docs section of the site. I believe it has a no fire debug section. It's worth noting that the OBD port in these engines isn't really OBD. You need the toyota scanner or tech tool to read codes from this engine.

First the accesorry panels get wet when you wash down boat causing the internal relays to short . They are no longer made and replaced with

DECC   Send PANEL W/O KEY SWITCH + DECC and 2 button wth orange wire Rick Cohn 10200 Newington drive Orlando, Fl 32836           575.00    35.00

The starting of the engine is independent of any switch pad. There are steps to follow
1. turn key on does the gauges buzz and go to zero? if no then it is the lanyard. if yes go to 2
2. Turn key to start does the engine crank? if no not in neutral
3. Key ON, There is a FP button engine hold down for 2 minutes and inspect the Fuel rail damper screw if it stays up about 1/8 inch. If it does not then the issue is fuel related. put vise grips on the black rubber line going back to tank. try step 3. again if it runs bad fuel pump or pumps.
4. If the engine runs at 1200 rpm there will be codes to determine what is wrong.

Problem solved. It was a safety lanyard fault! Thanks!
