trans fluid
« on: July 22, 2015, 07:03:18 am »
did my trans fluid and for the first time following the "Annual Vdrive and Driveline Maintenance pdf" sucked out about 1.35L and put in the same amount of mobile 1 full synthetic ATF. i didn't use dextron 3 as it doesn't say anything about that in the maintenance but i  later read in the shop manual and on threads here it does matter ?

after levelling the trailer running the boat for 7  min shutting off the boat and letting it settle for a minute or so and checking the level it was a bit over full so i sucked a bit more out (I'm now right on the full line)

do i need to suck it out and start over with dextron 3 ?
why isn't dextrin 3 mentioned in the Annual Vdrive and Driveline Maintenance pdf?
why didn't i get 2 litres out like it said ? the boat was nose down a bit on the driveway

I have used Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in my Epic for the last 5 years without any problems.  The specs show that it is Dexron IIIG and Dexron IIIH compatible - https://mobiloil.com/en/automatic-transmission-fluid/synthetic-atf .

I think the reason you are not pulling a full 2 quarts out is due to fluid that is trapped in the cooler lines and in the filter housing.  I'm not sure how big of a deal it is to mix the old fuild with your new synthetic, but it wasn't anything I've ever been worried about.

As far as measuring the fluid level, make sure you are doing it without the dipstick screwed in as shown in the owners manual and I would do the final check on the water since it may be different than how it sits on the trailer.

Jimbo, I didn't get quantities perfect. You're right, tranny is less than 2 quarts. I do recall you're supposed to measure right after turning engine off, not minutes later.

Also some confusion out there on v-drive fluid. Book calls for something special called MobilGear 626. Rick says 30W oil if I recall correctly.

Believe I cleared M1 ATF and gear oil with Jeff Dorge, the former west coast TMS rep, and both have been working well for 12 years.
