Water not coming out exhaust ports
« on: June 17, 2015, 18:38:22 pm »
I have a 2000/2001 Epic s22 V-drive with about 400 hours on it. This is my first season with it and I just got it out to try to get it running. I have a fake-a-lake plunger set up underneath with the garden hose attached and sending water in...The issue is that there is not water coming out of the exhaust port out the back as it should be.
I just pulled the impeller and housing and water has made it that far. I also pulled the thermostat housing and it appears water has made it that far as well. (I cleaned the thermostat and the housing over the winter and the hoses are clean and good.)
I tested the thermostat several times and it opens at 160 every time.
The water never even comes out. I ran it for a couple of minutes and nothing.Water is in the sea strainer as well...
I checked for leaks and there was a slight drip at the entrance to the impeller housing, but that was easily fixed because I forgot to tighten that one hose clamp all the way. Everything else is tight.
Help!
What now?

Where is all the water going? Is it filling the bottom of the boat?

It runs perfectly. I have water all the way to the thermostat housing. The hose from the impeller to the thermostat housing feels like a little water is running through when the engine runs, but it is not 'solid' with water if you know what I mean? There was lots of water in the hose leading right up to the impeller housing. I don't know if it was 'solid' with water since that hose is super rigid (right under the manifold that leads into the impeller....but there was definitely water in it.

New impeller and I even used the silicone (or whatever it was) in the package to lube it upon installation. I even removed the impeller housing and turned it with my hands and the impeller turns just fine...

The water is never really making it into the rest of the system...It is mostly spilling out the side of the fake-a-lake onto the ground

Put the boat in the water ad run it test the temperature on the exhaust manifolds can touch but not hold hand on top.
Leave on trailer . Or disconnect hose at thru hull and put water hose in the inlet of the hose

I am an hour from the lake... Putting it in the water will be tricky....
What do you mean "disconnect hose at thru hull and put water hose in the inlet of the hose"?

Where is the "thru hull"? is that the intake under the boat where I connected the fake-a-lake plunger? Are you saying I should remove that plastic shroud and jam the hose right in there?

Or are talking about somewhere else?

Thanks, I am not super technical when it comes to mechanic terms.
I really appreciate your help!

I think my impeller splines are bent the wrong way....I was just looking at the maintenance bulletin for installing a new impeller and the splines bend to the right when looking at it, mine bend to the left.

This is the image from the bulletin:  http://www.epicmarine.com/images/removeimpeller.JPG

notice how the splines all go right? When I removed my impeller earlier today they bent the opposite....I guess I need to pull the impeller out all the way and reset it in there? But, don't the splines bend back after it starts up, the picture make sit look like they are going opposite of the water flow? I am going to go try to remove it and reset it now...

How long are you letting it run?  When I hook mine up, it seems to take a few minutes before water starts coming out of exhaust at the rear of the boat.  When it does come out, it comes out in pulses.  Is your temp gauge moving, showing change in temp?

Thanks Dennis,
I have run it 3 times...once for about 4 minutes, once for about 1 minute and once for about 45 seconds after I read the thread here that said "if you run it for 45 seconds and no water comes out, something is wrong".
The temp gauge seems to work just fine. It got to around 100-110 or so when I ran it the first time, then it was about there when I ran it the second time because it was already warm. it is showing change in temp and moves.

Also crank the hose up all the way at least for starters. Like Dennis, mine takes a bit of time to make it through. It's been a while and freaked me out a bit last time I put her on the hose. Keep an eye on how much water is bypassing the plunger. You might be able to tell a difference in the plunger blowby between engine on and off. Maybe.

OK, I had it on pretty hard, hard enough that it was spewing all the way to the trailer wheel wells. It pulsed once or twice the last time I had it hooked up, and I was hoping that was the beginning of something great, but still nothing came through the exhaust port. There was little or no difference in the amount spewing out from the plunger whether the boat was on or off except for that one pulse I just mentioned.

Keep the ideas coming...I'l try anything....

Do you know what Capt rick meant by "Or disconnect hose at thru hull and put water hose in the inlet of the hose" I think he means disconnect the intake hose and put a garden hose right into it so it shoots water directly into the hose rather than trying to have it "sucked" in...???

Maybe not running long enough. Maybe look up exhaust with a flashlight. Maybe open some petcocks and run for a second. Maybe disconnect the line on the engine side of the sea water pump and running for a second. Maybe that last one first. Hate to say it but make sure the serpentine belt is routed correctly.

A lot of talk recently about exhaust lines being blocked...but don't think there's a real easy way to check them.

Sometimes I have issues getting my impeller to prime off the hose, but when I put it in the water it is fine.  Also when you are on the lake and in forward motion the water intake acts like a scoop and forces water in.  If you're out of ideas I say drive it to the lake and take it for a spin keeping a close eye on the temp guage and feeling the impeller hoses for cold water coming in.

Thanks guys. I am going to try to get it to the lake today. Maybe that will solve all my problems and force some water into that intake. I'll let you know. I really appreciate all the ideas.
