Carbon fiber engine cover project
« on: May 29, 2015, 06:49:24 am »
So one of my winter projects was to reproduce the factory engine cover in carbon fiber since mine had a couple cracks in it.  Myself and a buddy have about 15 years experience in prototyping and manufacturing composite parts for the automotive aftermarket and aircraft industries, so this project was a nice easy first project to crank out for my S22.  Made a nice reusable mold from my original cover, so more of these could be made.  It is vacuum/epoxy-infused full carbon, and autoclaved...making it super lightweight and strong.  This is part is mainly for aesthetics but does serve as a functional heat shield as well.  And being that our factory parts are discontinued this will be a nice option for possible replacements in the future.

I will attach a few pics of the process, turned out SWEET!

That looks great. Any chance you'd be up for popping out a couple more for those of us interested in buying one from you?

I figured some people would like this, thanks guys!  Its nice to have something that the other $100k wake boats can be jealous of haha! ;D

So this would be made by my friends company, Central Composites here in Redmond, OR.  To make more it would probably have to be a run of at least 4-5 at a time to be efficient and keep the price down.  Not sure on what a price would be, but what I know of the labor time and material I am guessing they would be in the $300 range.

Once I install it I will post some pics!

I have a suggestion for next year's winter project ;D ... Carbon fiber blower vent replacements for the rear of our boats.

How does carbon fiber deal with getting wet, drying, getting wet again and then baking in the sun?

Yes, those vent covers are one of the few Toyota Epic specific parts that you won't be able to get once they are gone.  I ordered replacements just in case.  I guess I could pull mine off and send to you for molds,  for a discount on the future carbon fiber ones!  But then again, they really don't have to be Carbon Fiber,  it would probably be just fine if they had a Carbon Fiber "look".
