aftermarket alternator, don't
« on: March 18, 2015, 18:18:29 pm »
had orig fail last year, replaced with Lexus one from Imports Direct. It failed sitting over the winter. housing is cracked in pieces. Had 5-6 hours on it.

So, bit the bullet and bought a new one from Capt Rick. I will get this one rebuilt if it ever needs it.

Thats what I recommend if anyone has one go out. There are rebuild parts available on the site.

I didn't see any physical differences between the two, the corrosion preventative coatings are probably what is different. The aftermarket rebuild one turned white and seized up within months

Oh, and the excellent service from Vintage Parts is unbeatable. Great, prompt service.

The Coast Guard requires the alternators to have a flash back prevention. The brushes have a spark collector so it won't cause an explosion if fumes are present.

I would spray Boeing T9 on all electronics specially v-drives.

Old thread, I know. But was this an OEM Lexus alternator? And the boat was not used in saltwater?

Trying to decide what to do about ours. Still has the original, which I could have rebuilt but even the black coating is coming off the outside. The price for new here is pretty steep. There were a handful of new ones on eBay earlier this year for ~ $160!!

It was a high quality aftermarket replacement. From local parts store.  No salt water. Less than 10 hrs use
