Exhaust Hoses
« on: November 21, 2014, 17:36:28 pm »
Planning to replace the exhaust hoses in early spring so I am doing some early research.

What type have you guys used? purchased from? Do we have to replace that middle hose that connects both sides also?

Even though I have direct drive, it looks to be a pain in the rear to do.

I had the inner lining separate on one of mine.   easy to replace.  I didn't do the smaller ones though that connect the manifold to the pipes.  I purchase mine from a marine shop here in town.  he cut it to size for me too.  they had a hard wire that he had to cut through.  take the old ones out and take it and see if they will cut if for you.

Same here, went to a couple marine shops around town before I found one that had the pipe w/ wire, and they cut it to size.   I would call around, verify its marine grade (cost extra but the peace of mind is worth it).

Got mine from Discount Inboard Marine, cut to length myself & replace all 5 hoses.  The two off the manifolds have wires due to the bend.  The others lay flat in the bilge.  The hardest part was getting the hoses loose from the manifold.  The wire in the hose was too difficult for me to cut with wire cutters, so I used a Dremel on an inverter off a battery which took a while!

The inside of my hoses were blistered & blocked about 50% of the opening in several places.  Seemed to run cooler after that.  Overall the project took about 2 hours at the boat ramp rather than driving home and back for about 1 hr 15 minutes.  Having done it once, shouldn't take an hour at home with the hose cut.  It went on much easier than came off.  Hope yours goes as well.

I'm at 200 hours ish , do they fail with use or time ?

anyone ever have their manifolds dipped or coated in something to make them last longer ? I'm thinking like a ceramic coating, i had a 3 stage product once that i used in a motorbike gas tank to line it to prevent corrosion.

you bring up a good point.  I really should just replace all of mine.  the one that failed for me was at 150 hours.  I am just at 280 and I should replace them all.  does anyone have the lengths and diameters of all the hoses?  maint docs are not real specific.

I know it's a 3" inch hose. The type is SAE J2006R2 but I don't know each specific piece length. I know I need a total of about 9' (buy 10" for mistake in measuring  ;D) and cut it myself at each required length.

I'm considering tackling this project this spring on my SX. For those of you who have already done it, any tips that made it easier? There's not a whole lot of room down there... Can the hoses from the risers be changed without removing the exhaust manifolds?

Is this the hose that goes from the risers down to the muffler?
MHO001080004   Hose,Exhaust,3"x22",PreCut,Black,Wire   21

What are these two hoses for? I'm assuming the long one goes from the muffler to the rear, but can't picture where the short one is. If anyone has a picture of their bilge area that would be great

MHO001155702   Hose,Exhaust,4"x17",S22,SX22,PreCut,Black   21

EDIT: This diagram kind of shows it..
http://www.epicmarine.com/figures/Fig.php?Figure=21

But now I'm more confused. Here is what's listed on the parts page
MHO001080003   Hose,Exhaust,3"x4",S,SX22,PreCut,Black,Wire   21
MHO001080004   Hose,Exhaust,3"x22",PreCut,Black,Wire   21
MHO001155701   Hose,Exhaust,4"x34",S22,SX22,PreCut,Black   21
MHO001155702   Hose,Exhaust,4"x17",S22,SX22,PreCut,Black   21
MHON00024101   Hose,Exhaust,3"x16",CrossOver,PreCut,Black,Wire   21
MHON00024103   Hose,Exhaust,3"x25",MuffToStern,PreCut,Black,Wire   21

Unfortunately my boat is about an hour away and still wrapped up from winter:(

Done it twice and it sucks. Took longer than an hour both times. I replaced the two 3" hoses coming off the exhaust manifolds and the two short ones after the elbows they connect to. I didn't replace the 4" hoses.

It is a grimy job. Use some big channellocks to break the bond on each end, I also used some large oil filter pliers to twist the hose. Make sure you use the flexible type of hose (has ribs, not smooth) for the long pieces off the exhaust manifolds. The factory sometimes used the smooth inflexible type, if you are swapping the engine it works fine but you need to bend it to get it on an installed engine.

Use some dishwashing soap as a lubricant. I wouldn't do it at the ramp!
