No high rpm
« on: November 10, 2014, 13:42:35 pm »
I have a 2001 SX with low hours. Last couple of years I only used it for a week in Tahoe. Had it serviced last year then put in storage. This year at Tahoe, it ran fine at low rpm, but ran really rough at 9mph and wouldn't go faster than 10. Been in the shop since, getting a new fuel pump [high pressure and low] and a new fuel pressure regulator. Still not fixed. Any ideas, because they're out. Thanks

Hope you changed your fuel water separator, you could also clean the mass airflow sensor, they get loaded up with crap on a v drive for some reason. My .02 hope it helps:)

Had a similar problem at higher elevation (around 6,000) a few years back.

Ended up taking the flame arrestor/air filter off and things improved.

Came home and decided to clean the flame arrestor/air filter (which I do each year when I winterize) also decided to clean the MAF sensor (never cleaned this before).  I removed the MAF sensor from the air intake housing.  Used some throttle body cleaner.

Took the boat out after the cleaning and wow.  Consistent power through out the rpm range.  Lot's more power as well.  Must have been a few years since I remember this kind of performance.

Guess I'll add the MAF sensor each year to my maintenance/winterize routine;-)

Remember spark plugs along with all the above info.

Consider 8 plugs for $16.  Wakejunky is a Toyota/Lexus master diagnostic technician with 10 years experience before a business opportunity called him elsewhere...(sold his '01 SX & rarely chimes in)

just from experience. I never put anything but denso or ngk in anything especially Toyota and Lexus.

also from experience the iridium will foul faster due to the small electrode. iridium is designed for 120K mileage intervals in a closed loop fuel system. we do not have a closed loop fuel system (no o2 sensor feedback). plus we run a 160 degree thermostat that makes our boats run rich. Rich makes good power but also fouls plugs especially if your using anything other than 91 or higher octane. My secret is to run factory denso sparkplugs for a 2000 or so model year Toyota tundra 4.7 liter. They are less than $2 a plug from the dealer. they are a standard plug with a much larger electrode area. I've ran the same set of tundra plugs in my epic for 2 years with no problems. Just put a fresh set in because I'm selling it.

why spend money on iridium or platinum if your going to change them every year or so.
