New Epic! Comments/Questions/Pictures
« on: September 02, 2014, 14:58:53 pm »
Hello everybody! Thanks for the great resource that lead to us buying our first inboard boat, that happens to be an Toyota Epic 22. From your posts, comments, and technical advice I was able to feel confident enough to purchase an older boat that no longer has manufacturer support. I have always been a Toyota/Lexus fan, so having a wakeboard/ski boat made by Toyota is pretty exciting.

We purchased it from a member on here who also bought it from another member(known members: Echelon73, jellydoughnut, BA2397). The boat has just over 2000 hours, but the engine has around 400 hours. Considering the age and number of hours, it seems to be in great shape and will be better next season after we replace some vinyl, do a thorough cleaning, and look into cleaning and/or replacing some of the carpet.

We have a few electrical issues to work out as well as a replacing a leaking packing, but she runs great and will continue to do so after some TLC.

Now, some questions(pictures included)

1. What is the point of the small hole on the stern. All epics seem to have it, and it looks like it is threaded, but I cant figure out exactly what it is?

2. I assume this is a breather for the gas tank?

3. What are these things for? They do not seem to be on other Epics and the PO did not know what they were for. There are two on each side just below the windshield. The hole in the middle is threaded.

4. Last question. Is the pop-up tie down on the stern just behind locker for just tying up to docks or can we tow from that point as well?

Thanks for all of your help up to this point and in the future! See the next post for boat pics!

Also, want to add that I live in Acworth, GA right by Lake Allatoona, but the boat will be staying up at Lake Burton in NE GA.

First off, welcome to the forums and I hope you enjoy your new boat !

I'll try to answer a few of these :

1.  I think this is just a drain hole for the seal around the trunk lid so water doesn't get trapped in there.

2.  Yes, the silver thing is the fuel tank vent

3.  My guess is that piece is used for tying down a bimini top and the threaded hole is for a thumb screw.

4.  If you are talking about the stern popup cleat ( round ), then yes you can use this for towing as well as tying up to docks.  I think the tow liimit is around 300 lbs.

ATX is correct.
1. Small hole is a drain hole for the rear trunk lid, should be a small hose between it and the train hole close to the lid seal; hole may have got pulled loose....
2. Is the vent for the fuel tank
3. Appears to be a mount point for a bimini top, not stock
4. Is a tow and mooring cleat.

WELCOME, good choice of boats, we have one with over 3000hrs.  LOT of good times left in her.  Before ripping up carpet, try pressure washing, we use a 1200 psi, still on original carpet in all boats.  Good Luck.  Doug

I have already tried pressure washing but it continues to stink. I will try it with a brush and/or steam cleaner next. If that does not work then we will look into the options of replacing. The small pad up front probably needs to be replaced either way. Thanks!

Also, I meant to ask, the glovebox does not seem to be waterproof. Are they supposed to be and what are your suggestions to make it waterproof again? Thanks!

jhardy,
You will have to use a product that is a Bio-Enzymatic Digester that will eliminate any organic
waste that may be in your carpet.  Treat it for a couple of days, keep it moist, the odor should be gone.
At that point, apply a hospital grade disinfectant, which has a Virucidal and Fungicidal properties found in the product.
(Kills mold and Mildew)
This has to be done in a two step process. The enzymes feed on the organic waste and the disinfectant will kill the good "bugs" in the enzymes if you apply them together. Don't for get the area under the cushions in the bow or the trunk areas.
Try not to use Bleach.  it is very corrosive and takes the color out of the things.
Also i just cleaned out my bulge this weekend with a mild degreaser. That also may be part of the smell.
mold and mildew, yeech!

Update:
We are getting a dripless system installed for the packing, so we should never have a problem with that again.

The electrical connections had some corrosion and slight algae :o growing, so after those were cleaned up we should be good to go.

Next few things to take care of before next season:
- Fixing the broken trunk hinge (weld it back? Suggestions?)
- Find gas struts for the trunk (there are not any there)
- Waterproof the glovebox and/or replace
- Usual clean and wax
