oil pressure drop
« on: July 29, 2014, 19:41:54 pm »
Just  checking to see if anyone has ever seen this issue before.
I replaced my oil pressure sending unit this year as it was no longer reading, even when engine not running was showing 80psi.
After replacement the unit seem to be working fine, oil pressure runs between 40 at idle and 70 when running.
When taking off out of the hole hard the oil pressure sometimes drop out for a second or so but immediately jumps right back up, have also had this occur 2 other times when hard turning.
Oil level is good, fresh Mobil 1 oil as well...
Could this just be the oil moving around the pan and it not getting to the pickup for a split second?

I've had a few oil alarms, but all were false.

I was running WOT and went into a hard turn. Pressure dropped and boat went into limp in mode. It also happened another time, just cruising. I think my problem both times was the oil was overfilled. Both happened at the start of the year when I had 5 litres of oil in the pan, where I think it asks for 4.5 litres. Now I add 4.0 litres of oil and then top it up slowly so it is just under the full mark.

Sure this is off-topic, but trip out with me. Removed the driver's kick panel and slid in the subwoofer box. Didn't have time to secure either prior to our week at Havasu. Noticed heading upriver on the most crowded day I've seen in years, that when we hit hard chop, the engine would go into these little micro-limps/stalls. Barely noticeable at first, they started getting a little worse with time. Don't recall if the gauges were dropping out. Keep in mind these were tiny dropouts. Checked the connectors on the back of the kill switch, then sure enough, found I had disturbed one of the big automotive connectors under the helm and it was separating and making intermittent contact. Spotted it, pressed it together until it snapped, and it was good all week. Takeaway for me was...if something new's popping up, it's probably related to something I've done.

Thanks for the feedback so far.
Toyotafreak, I had a similar issue with the killswitch, mine has become a little sensitive and will sometimes cut out when hitting hard...but when that happens all gauges drop out and engine will cut out....what is happening now is only effecting the oil pressure gauge....not really concerned as it does not happen all the time but was more wondering if others have seen this..75% of the time I am pulling tube and slinging the boat hard, have never had it happen under normal running, wake board or ski use.

Have to agree with Toyotafreak. Most of my problems have been caused by things I've done. Had a loose connection at the lanyard last day of vacation. Turns out the wakesurf fin got caught on the lanyard just enough to make the boat stall out.

Odd oil pressure dropouts are normal, along with other gauge oddities (low voltage alarms) on all epics and boats produced with borg warner servo driven gauges in the 99-2002 time period.i've done lots of ground wire fixes, bigger wire to dash supply etc. still have issues. With oil pressure, its quite often the sender.

Malibu, supra, moomba, etc used these gauges. For fun, search the malibu forum for yr 2k gauge issues LOL

Thanks, good to see you back on here as well.

I have not done any ground wire work yet, will most likely do some this fall when I am done running. My volt meter does not even work currently, just fixed oil pressure by replacing sending unit at start of season.

Not sure what volt meter issue is yet, voltage reads 0...may be a bad connection like I hade with the tach earlier this season (tach was only showing about 1/2 the rpms, wiggled connection a bit and came right back).

I do notice that when I turn on the blower it turns of my radio temporarily, most likely due to voltage drop...maybe due to wire sizes and grounding which seem to be the most common issues.

yes, voltage drop makes the decc drop out for a sec. The dash supply was not designed to support all of the aftermarket stuff that people bolt on, even dealers:) bigger wires help but aren't a real fix
