Raw Water Pump drip at approx 630 hours
« on: May 17, 2014, 05:16:13 am »
While dewinterizing my SX last week, I noticed a drip from the raw water pump. After removing the pump and taking it apart, I determined that it was a leak from the lip seal. The bearings in the pump also had a noticeable amount of play. I disassembled the pump, purchased new bearings and a new seal, had a machinist press new bearings onto the shaft and reassembled. Overall was a very easy fix.

After removing the seal I noticed that the spring was broken inside. The bearings also showed some signs of water damage, so it may have been leaking for a while. I also noticed that the seal did not have a stainless steel spring... I decided to upgrade to a stainless steel spring... Hoping to get more life out of it this time.

I'm not sure if the bearings wore faster due to the leaking seal or if the seal failed due to the excessive play in the bearings?

I have always changed the impeller each spring, but did not pay too much attention to the bearings for play/smoothness. I will now make sure I check them. I expect that if I had not rebuilt the pump this fall I would have had a complete fail/bearings seize this summer.

Got out in the boat today with the rebuilt pump and it ran great. Bring on summer.

Great info
Do you have the part numbers and mfg. name for the seal and bearing?

Bearings were SKF 6203 2RS... Apparently this is a very common bearing. I was able to purchase them from the local autoparts store for $8 CDN each.

The lip seal was much more difficult to find. It's an odd metric size, which according to all of the local shops, is not very common. I ended up having one ordered in. I feel like I got completely bent over on the price, however I wanted my boat for this weekend, so I sucked it up and paid. The seal is a 16x28x7. I opted to go with a version that had a stainless steel spring. Apparently this doubles the price... My cost was $24 CDN for the seal and $15 shipping... Complete robbery IMO.

As for the rest, the machinist charged $35 to remove the old bearings, clean up the shaft, inspect and remove a very small imperfection on the seal surface and install the new bearings onto the shaft.

For pump reassembly, I put the housing in the oven on low temp and the shaft/bearing unit in the freezer. Everything easily slid together. Reassembly took less than 10 minutes.

Overall, a completely rebuilt water pump for $90 CDN seems pretty reasonable to me.

Thought I'd bring this post back from the dead. Super helpful explanation for my leaky water pump project.  ;DZombie topic for the win!
