Leaking Gasket on cover Below Exhaust Manifold? HELP!!!
« on: July 14, 2009, 02:10:06 am »
Epic owners...
I put my 99 X22 into the water yesterday to prep for a trip to Jackson Hole this weekend.  I was running around about 30 mins and taking on water... realized it was from an oblong plate that covers a hole in the block, on the drivers side of the engine underneath where the exhaust manifold is bolted on.  I assume this is for something you need if you use this block on a car, but because its on a boat they have it sealed off.

I went to my local marine retailers, no one had any gaskets that would fit although many thought it looked like a temperature sensor gasket (I dunno).  I used some create-a-gasket goop that was supossed to harden and be able to handle it and let it sit for 24 hours, but I put it in the water today ran it between 3k and 4k without the prop running and after about 20 mins the goop failed and it started spitting hot water into the bilge.

I can't find anything on the forum that would show me what sort of GASKET this would be and the guy at the Toyota Motors parts shop said he thought the stuff on the plate looked like it was gasket goop.

Anyone seen this fail?  Anyone got any good ideas on how to fix it?  I was thinking about cutting a thick piece of coolant hose from a auto parts store and shimming it between the block and this oblong cover thing thinking it would be thick and probably rated for the temps we would be seeing on my X22, but figured I would ping you guys as well.

I am leaving tomorrow... so if you have any fixes tonight or tomorrow I would LOVE to hear them..

CHEERS!!

Search "freeze plug" and look at westx's thread. Does the pic show what you have leaking?

The engine had water in it and froze. The cover plate has 2 bolts and needs to be removed and to remove warping on plate. Create a gasket with permatex 38b. Check also the heater pipes for leaking.
If it has

DAMN you guys are good... this is EXACTLY what is leaking, I will see if I can find some of this Permatex stuff...

I did notice that when I took it off it was no longer FLAT, I assumed it was a manufacturing flaw... do I simply hammer it out to be flat again?  It sounds like I can patch it for now then fix it before the winter freeze hits....

Thanks Epic FOLKS!

Haha... ok so i just looked up Permatex 2 and this is EXACTLY what I used the "goop".... I think perhaps my application was not properly dried... I will redo it when I have a few days of drying time to let it cure...

Thanks again folks...

Mine's still drip dripping away. I'll get around to the fix someday.

Wow, didn't know about that one. I'll have to check mine, I've got water leaking from somewhere.... I always winterize but you never know with a used boat.

I had the same issue over winter and tried this fix with Permatex 2. It held fine at idle, but after about 10 minutes of running it is leaking substantially again. Any tips on different gasket sealant to use? Should I try the Permatex Red High Temp? Any other advice?

Use Toyota FIPG, best sealant you can get. Any Toyota dealership will have it in stock. Make sure the area is dry before applying and completely clean.Use an angle grinder with a 3M red buff pads on both the block and cover( or 220 grit sandpaper) wipe both clean with brake cleaner or rubbing alcohol.  Apply sealant, install, and let set for 24 hrs.

Thanks, I'll try that. I really didn't put much effort into the prep. I'll give it another shot and report back. Thanks.
