Wow, I'm glad you bought a Toyota.  Your posts are incredibly useful.  I for one appreciate that you go through the entire process for those of us that don't have much experience with your modifications.  Again, thanks and great job.

Don't you need a gate valve on it to keep the water from escaping to the intake below the boat?

Gate Valve not needed.
Moderate inflow from the hose with keep the Filter Bowl full of water, which is adequate for the sea-water pump to draw from.
The beauty of this approach is the hose primes the sea water pump, yet it won't over-pressurize the system because it spills out the intake.

Typically I only run the engine in idle.  And then on occassion will rev the engine, in short bursts.

After starting the engine, in idle, it takes upwards of 20 - 30 seconds for the exhaust manifolds to fully charge. Then water expelled from the exhaust ports is cyclic as the water levels inside the manifolds charge and spill.
