Quick question about trailer reverse lockout key
« on: July 26, 2007, 14:07:04 pm »
I am going up north this weekend and a buddy is putting my boat in the water for me. it is only gettting pull 100 yards to the launch but he only has a 4 pin connector.  i know i can put the loackout key in the surge brakes but i dont know how big the slot is.  i need to make something that will fit from the hardware store.  can someone measure the slot for the surge brakes so i can think of something.  i am thinking a couple washers but i need to know the size of the slot

any advice would be great cause we are leaving today.  thanks

All you need to do is plug the trailers blue wire into the cars running light and turn on car lights.....
The ground is via trailer .

I done that for the last 4 years. When I dont wire the reverse lights.

My trailer slot is 1 in x 3/4 in. The key length is just under 1 in but is 3/4 in wide. I knew my trailer would come in handy!
Don't be so humble, you're not that great.

Similar to Cptn Ricks comment - you should be able to flip the 4 pin vehicle connector around and plug it into the 5 pin trailer connector with just the last pin connected.  Ie, plug the end pin of the 4 wire plug to the end pin of the 5 wire plug.  If you then turn on your lights, this will allow backing up.  Note  - none of your other lights (signals, breaks, running) etc will work when connected this way - so only do it for backing up. As mentioned earlier, the ground will be through the trailer and hitch.
Its always epic on the lake

If you have a nut and some electrical tape, you've got it solved.  Just tape the nut to your trailer in the slot where the trailer tounge compresses into the trailer when you are breaking.  Problem solved, just be sure to remove the nut so your brakes will work on the highway.  You don't need the key.  Cost of solution - less than a nickel.

Just a thought,
The keys for the trailer are $9.00 max. It hangs on the trailer right next to the slot.
I aquired one right after the purchase of my E-22.
Going out today....yeeha!

Also you might check any of your local marine dealerships.  They receive 2 for each new trailer they acquire.  My local dealer had a coffee can full of them, and gave me one for free.
