Advice on Epic Purchase
« on: June 14, 2007, 18:58:26 pm »
Hi There.  This is my first post.  After reading a bunch on this site, I am highly interested in an Epic.  There is a 99 Epic 22 available locally for $19K.  I am going to look at it on Saturday.  I will be using it primarily for wake boarding.  I have a Taylor Tower that I would install on it.  Here is a link to the listing:

http://www.northpointwatersports.com/pre_owned_detail.asp?sid=05099146X6K14K2007J11I52I56JAMQ1809R0&veh=515792

I would appreciate any opinions on this boat.  Is it a good deal?  What should I look for when I go look at it?  Will it make a nice transition to a wake board boat?  My first choice is an S22, but I can't find any available anywhere.  I'd appreciate opinions if it would be worth while waiting for an S22?  If I do find an S22, what should I expect it would cost.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

I was in a similar situation last Sept.  (2006).  I went with the S22, found one in Utah and drove up there to get it.  It was a 2000 that was well taken care of and had really low hours 148 when I bought it I believe.  I am really happy with the decision to get an S22 and a Toyota.  I owned an older (1992)  Mastercraft Prostar 205 before.  I liked the Mastercraft, but I love the Toyota and the V drive to me is worth the wait for.

I've seen a few S22's for sale over the past 3 - 4 months, links were posted on this site.  If I had to do it again I would be patient and get an S22 if that's what you want.  I think you should expect to pay 26 - 30K for one that has been well taken care of with fairly low hours.

I know it is hard to be patient.  i ended up buying mine at the end of the year so i had to wait a whole winter to use it.  painful.  i bought a 99 epic 21 for 16,500 with 140 hours on it with the trailer.  i know the 22 has the open bow but i would wait to see what comes up.  unless you just have piles of money laying around then i would but it and get on the water

I was waiting for a Vdrive for awhile, but I love the Epic 22 I wound up with. We don't do any heavy wakeboarding, though. I'm excited to see some ballasted Toyotas at the Texas round-up in July. With no ballast at 20 mph, my E22 seems to throw a huge wake (anyone with lakeside property would agree). Can't imagine how big it would be with another thousand pounds or so in the boat, but I'm good for 260 myself any day!

I posted a thread a couple of weeks ago w/ a bunch of epics for sale.  You may want to look for the thread and see if any of those are still available as well.  Good luck and remember that it is a large investment to make....so get exactly what you want!

I have an X22 and it is my first wakeboard boat and it has been excellent.  I was also waiting for a V but I am happy with my X22.

I have been behind both boats and I think they both have great wakes.  If you don't mind the layout of the direct drive (engine in the middle) then it is both easier to work on and cheaper.  If you are like me and like the seating in the v-drive, then wait and get what you really want.  You don't want buyers remorse 5 months from now.  The link above is actually a direct drive (if you look closely at the pictures you will see the engine cover in the middle of the boat), and sounds like it is in good condition, but priced like a v-drive.  Good luck!

If E22's start selling for $28K, mine goes to the first bidder!

Having owned both, I can say I would be perfectly happy with either boat. I like the seating and the big ass sunpad of the V drive, I like the storage and ease of maintenance on the D drive. jI honestly like both boats equally for different reasons. I recommend you get the cheapest one possible, I'd even look at the closed bow E21, they are great boats and huge for a closed bow. It depends on what you want to do with the boat, the wakeboard wake on all three is very similar. Not the same, but not significantly different. If you go out a couple or four times a week with four or five people, any of the boats will work great. If the ultimate wakeboard wake is all you are into, buy an Xstar and pay 200$ for gas every weekend;) If you ski, all three have a decent ski wake, the E21 is the best for that, the SX is best for WB wake just due to the fact that it has internal ballast, it handles best when loaded up. Wake size is about the same on a loaded out E22 vs an SX, the E22 is a bit more cupped and rampier than the SX. The SX wake is a little steeper with less of a cup or "sweet spot" like the E22 has. The E21 wake looks very similar to the e22, but I haven't been behind one loaded up.

Pete, we will eliminate that issue this summer at the 3rd Annual Great Southeastearn Epic Roundup!!!

Greg, are you located in the DFW area?  I have a S22 (not for sale) but you can come riding with me and check out the boat if you like. I live just south of Denton.
