Side discharge exhaust
« on: May 30, 2007, 18:08:19 pm »
Hello Epic fans,

I just bought myself a nice wakesurf board and I am a bit concerned about death by carbon monoxide. Has anyone added a side discharge port, or rerouted the exhaust? I have a pretty good idea on how to work it out, I just wanted to see if anyone else had done this. Thanks

Jason

I haven't done that mod myself but i do wake surf behind my '99 X-22.  i've done up to 20 min. sessions and haven't experienced any symptoms or death from the CO2, hah.  But sounds like a good mod just to be safe... i'm interested as well!

If I recall correctly the people passing out from CO is from teak surfing - holding on to the platform with your head really close to the exhaust

Wake surfing / Wake skating you should be fine without relocating the exhaust - especially if you have one of these

Rather than hacking your boat apart you can get something like picture below for under $400 - I think that is a way better and much more cost effective approach

I recall the same on the teak surfing. I've wakesurfed for around 4 seasons with no ill effects that I'm aware of. The only time i've ever smelled exhaust is every once in a while at the start and once you're going it's not an issue for me.

Seems like if you did the side exhaust you would have to go out both sides so you could turn off whichever side you were surfing on. I believe I saw a B-52 with this. If you don't do it that way, the exhaust is even closer to your face, no?

Correct, if you are out on the wake the side exhaust is probably more likely to get you unless you do it the both sides approach.

I think that makes even more of a case to push it down in the water.

This company doesn't list any of our boats but I doubt it would be too terribly difficult to fab a currently available one up to work.

Thanks guys, My S22 only has a single exhaust port on the right. I was thinking of something much lower tech, like this! Ha. I think I will just try it (my board will be here in a few days) and if i think I need to move it I will. Any advice on weighting the boat for max wake? Any speed recomendations?

Thanks

You could get one of those sporty chrome turndown tips like them MaliBOOs have. It might help. Honestly, I don't think you're gonna have a problem unless you are hanging on the platform or breathing exhaust at idle.
