Found a leading suspect right here. Mass Airflow Sensor measures the amount of air coming in through the intake and adjusts fuel accordingly. It looks to me like there's two wires, and one of them has a ghost turd/dust bunny wrapped around it. Has got to be the big part of the problem.

Check out this link for description of both MAF cleaning and throttle body cleaning:

Also, a couple pics from my intake. Definitely dirtier than what the Sequoia was when I cleaned it.

In reality it's PROBABLY simply that the bunny got on the mass airflow wires which caused the ECU to miscalculate air and adjusted fuel accordingly. So I suspected water in fuel, bad fuel, bad fuel pump, bad spark.

While troubleshooting on the lake, I noticed the sounds of exhaust leaks. At home, I followed up and found that all four on that side have been leaking. My gess is that's been going on for some time.

I never wanted to wrench on a boat weekend. It's one of the reasons I went over budget on the boat and one of the reasons I was attracted to the brand, and specifically the engine. I knew that if nothing else, the drivetrain would be TURN KEY for years.

My opinion hasn't changed. This stuff happens to all boats, it's just a matter of the other guys either knowing what they're doing or taking it to someone who does. I am able to go longhand because of Pete's great site and all the members who help out. Try something and report. Get feedback. Try another thing and report. It's iterative and maybe not quick, but way cheaper and keeps the boat out of the Sea Ray guy's hands.

Nice find Derek. I had the air intake off earlier this year and cleaned the throttlebody off but never thought about the MAF. Probably wouldn't have cleaned it properly either. It makes sense since the engine is so tightly enclosed. All the belt dust, carpet fibers and so on is going to get sucked in there. Think I'll add this to my list to do every couple of years.

Man, you're a couple days late with this cleaning info. My check engine light in my car came on the other day and the dealer said I needed a new MAF. I was like, "ok, how much is that?" thinking it would be a few bucks. No such luck. It was going to be $700 bucks plus labor to install! I left and found the exact same MAF on the net for $350. Still a boatload of cash, but half the dealer's cost. I put it in myself, but of course my car company had secured it with funky star shaped screws with a post in the middle of the slot (heh, heh, he said post in the middle of the slot). Anyway, I had to go buy a special tool ($10) to unscrew the two screws. It was a two minute job to replace it once I had the right tool. Stinking car company really wants you to use their dealer for repairs. Every nut and bolt on my car is a weird shape or size, so you have to buy the special tools. Anyway, I'm going to go check the old MAF and see if it just needed cleaning.

I pulled the mass air flow sensor and found it not to be dirty I think. Should I clean it anyways as long as it is out I am having a rough idle even after new plugs, fuel filter, gas and fuel injector cleaner.

Yes clean the MAF sensor. before you remove it mark which way it is installed. Clean it and install.
With a OBD2 computer if the sensor show more then 25 gm it will foul the plugs. This is why on Wakeboard boats you will get fuel dumping out exhaust. It will also crack the exhaust manifold from cold wet fuel.. above 400 hours or average 1000 hours.

Therfor recommend cleaning and changing belt if it is breaking down. Change plugs each year..

Also there are a few failures on fuel pumps... I have 9 instock as complete kits for $288. of the $419 price.
2310150020   Pump,Fuel,Primary,No1,TopMount    $143.94
2310150030   Pump,Fuel,Secondary,No2,BottomMount    $143.94

If you experience a no start, then fuel pump could be locked up after 3 months of no operation..
1. keep vise grip on boat , clamp return line anywhere. it will allow the engine to run off 1 working pump.
2. tap on bad pump to free metal ball bearing....
3. Order new pump....

This is a take off kit: tested:
upper and lower pumps mount brackets and hose connector between pumps; backing plates.

take off means used pumps.   Not that it should be a show stopper or anything  This is one part i won't be intimidated about. A pump delivers pressure, there are plenty for cheap that will do that.

Take Offs are engines that where new unsold parts removed by TRD. If you can find an approved marine fuel pump let me know. To order go to TMS on top of page in search enter part number 2310150020 , add to cart enter other part number 2310150030 search ,add to cart,  pay....
You will get a tested complete unit shipped.
Thanks

The constant, correct fuel pressure for these engines is critical. I don't think an off-the-shelf pump will cut it.

I rather play it safe. Got my order in...

So Capt, how 'bout all those exhaust manifolds the TRD guys "took off"? Still command the same $700 price?

As far as fuel pumps go, you have nine kits, but what's the total number of pumps "we" have?

Do you recommend any particular process for cleaning the airflow sensor? Fuel injection intake cleaner, no carb clean, right? Do it when the engine's off, right? When you say hook up to OBD2, do you mean there's a way to connect directly to the sensor, or is that a value that can be read throught the ECU?
