S22 Ballast tanks????
« on: April 01, 2007, 17:53:57 pm »
Pat Sullivan tells me that the S22 boats have the same ballast tanks under the floor that the SX's do. He was told that the tanks may or may not be sealed correctly. Pat is going to drill a hole in his boat in an appropriate spot and test his tanks for leaks. The tanks are independent, on the outside of the stringers.

Here is a pic from the ballast and tower owners manual, and a pic of the location  of the factory vent from the port tank. The tanks are connected up front via hose, I'll have to get a pic of the fitting. It looks like they just drilled a hole and mounted a plate with a 1" pipe fitting (female) into which is screwed a 3/4" barb fitting. Note that the vent fitting is mounted on top of the carpet, it appears. It's raining, so I can't check it today.

The tank level gauges are screwed right to the carpet, they look exactly like the fuel sender. They are located under the rear corner seats on each side.

This is fantastic news for S22 owners. Imagine, being able to retrofit your boat with under floor ballast tanks. Even if it took a little exploratory surgery and fiberglass work, it would be worth doing. Hell, it's only fiberglass. I'd go in from the outside if necessary! (well, maybe not!)

I put in a pic of the location of the ballast pumps and solenoids

Thanks for this great news, Pat!

Oh, I forgot to give the measurements. The vent hole is 12" from the inside of the door flange, I pushed the tape all the way in until it touched. It was exactly 12" from the hull as well, so dead center. The fitting was 2.5" back from the forward bulkhead in the compartment. The fitting has a 3 ft length of 3/4" hose that goes up to a 5/8" drain fitting below the rubrail, no check valve. Same thing on starboard, it's behind the kick panel. I'll be puttin a sub in there, may have to get jiggy with the jigsaw around the fitting.

When you put your sub in there I would be very interested to know where you moved the heater.  I'm debating adding a second sub -- all the new stereo stuff kinda overpowers the one sub.  And since I have that Kenwood amp just sitting around, ....

Pete ,When you and I spoke  you said it appeared that they used fuel senders for the water levels in the tanks where did they put those? especially interested on the starboard side, and could you get a picture of the side where your throttle is?

Here's the pic from the Ballast and tower owners manual. There are two different SX ballast systems, one has four pumps, one has two. Mine is the later, two pump system shown in Fig 10. It is much simpler, I prefer it. In a perfect world, that thing should fill and empty in 4.36 min. It won't with the small valve, I may even change the drain pump to a 2k, it will help both ways. 1" valves are a must. Hopefully, I won't run out of room!

Cal, you have gobs more room under the dash than I do. Pull the panel, remove the plastic frame that supports the panel (screws into the floor. Build a box to fit that huge space, a 12w7 is no problem. You can mount the heater box to it or to the hull. I cut a square of carpet away, and liquid nails, I glue a piece of MDF to the hull. I then screw a carpeted  home depot cutting board cut to the right size with access holes drilled in it to the MDF block. Them, mount whatever you want to the board.

I can give you the dimensions of the box I built for the 12, take pics etc. It had a w6 in it, but a w7 would require a double thickness of 3/4" MDF, so it would be a bit larger. Plenty of room even if you mount the panel in the stock space, you can even bring it out quite a bit for more room. I had a huge 6 ch. line driver, relays for lights and pumps under there, that sub, still plenty of room for more.

The ballast is in the S22 ( the one I have anyway) But I have a minor problem in mine the first is the area a small leak between the gas tank and the bulkhead in the bow,the second was created when I install the seacock I have a leak Between the inner liner of the boat and the oak block that my seacock sits on the reason for the oak block is to stiffen up the inner liner when opening and closing the seacock, minor problems which should take about 4 hours to fix but the benefit is huge to gain 700 lbs of weight, and not using storage space to get it. It will be interesting to see what Pete can do with the area in that forward bulkhead possibly more saved space. What is not shown in the ballast diagram is that the port and starboard tanks are connected through the liner. I will take pictures throughout the process.

This is great news and I can't wait to see the pics.  I remembered there was a thread about this same topic back when I was trolling the forums trying to figure out if I wanted to take the plunge.  I went back and pulled up the thread and Triano himself replied to Blindside about tanks in the S22 platform.

PSullivan3, how did you figure out you had the tanks?

The thread:

I did lol, so I thought I would ask the designer.

Hi Dave,

I was wondering if you could tell me what is located in the S22 were the SX22 has the built in ballast tanks.  Are the tanks in the S22 and they just aren't tapped?  I was also wondering what is beneath the floor in the bow of the boat.  Is there room to cut a hatch and put in a internal ballast up there?

Thanks,

Brent Baker

I think the earliest S22's had nothing in there but air, as it is not necessary to foam places like that on a 22' boat. I have some recollection that later boats were foamed 'just for the heck of it'. There shouldn't be tanks in a plain S22 'untapped' as you say, that would have been a colossal waste of money in a time when Toyota was needing to economize, and I never heard of such a practice.

They did a lot of things out there in Groveland that weren't by the book, but that would be a pretty big stretch.
There's not going to be too much room forward, but you could probably get a few hundred pounds total with a conformal bag, maybe 40-50 gallons depending on what bulkheads are in there, if they put any. The boat was designed with two longitudinal stringer type bulkheads in the bow floor vertical wall well area.

Best regards - Dave Triano

I spoke to a couple of folks, and they said it is possible but they could not tell me if they( tanks) are sealed. I drilled a pilot hole and then a 1" for a garden hose and a plug if it didn't work. I sprang a leak at 30 gallons according to my house water meter.

Here's a pic of a rear sender, it's that square thing in the floor aft of the battery.

Where is the foam? Is it in the middle of the tank? You could also put an access hole under the seat on the port, maybe inside the step on the starboard if you needed to get into the tank. You could dissolve the foam with something. You might even be able to get your arm in with some mat and resin. I'd cut a hole right in the middle of the floor if that were necessary to fix my tank. Use the screw in watertight deckplates, good to go.

the foam was in the closet where you gave me the measurements it was angled at about 33 degrees from bow to stern, if it means my getting to use those areas I would take out my 4 or 6 hole saw to reclaim that space. I actually also drilled a 1" hole at port side center seat in the center thats where I filled from ,I am going to put the sender there. I can't say to cut a hole in it but if I had a problem I would. You read where I said the tanks are connected, which I thought was pretty cool. I'm going to mount the pumps in the stern run an 1 1/8" hose and Y off to both tanks should fill pretty fast and split off to the bow bags. Those tanks save allot of work and space.

that's really cool, be sure and take detailed pics, we will hear a lot more on this I am sure.

Here's a pic of the ballast panel

I started with the ballast making sure everything is sealed and will be able to retest in 24 hours. Then I will start plumbing it and taking pictures.
