Scott, just picked up your voice message. sorry for the delay. Afraid i don;t have anything to add to the discussion here as this has not happened to me. I'm certainly not the best person on this forum to really help on mechanical things. I just read alot here. Hope you get it worked out. I will check mine now knowing it could be a problem.

I will keep you guys posted as I convert my engine over to closed cooling in the next few months.  I will keep Toyota parts to a minimum; hopefully a different t-stat housing from Toyota will all that is required, the rest of the parts I will get from ebay, etc.

FYI my engine is going in a 1972 Chris Craft XK18.  When I got the boat recently, it had no engine, but was a 454 originally with an inefficient jet drive, maybe 55 mph max.  With the efficient surface drive and lightweight Toyota engine I am hoping for 60-65 mph.

On the last pic, I have a wastebasket holding up the drive close to how it is installed on the transom.  Where the wastebasket is, eventually will be the propeller and twin rudders.

Some of these came with blue metalflake paint and red, white and blue shag carpet, that is what I am planning at present.

Very cool project.........what kind of outdrive is that anyway?  Looks interesting......looks kind of like arneson drives i think it was that i saw on cigarette boats and the likes at miami boat show years ago.

That looks like a very cool project!
If you download the install doc on the closed loop cooling, there's not much to it. A heat exchanger/reservoir and some fittings that you put in, cut your original hoses and reroute.

That is a surface drive propeller drive system.  It is a www.pulsedrive.net brand.  Arneson is another brand of surface drives.  There are other brands as well, Arneson being the one with the most noted name.  With a surface drive, the propeller is half in and half out of the water, this eliminates propeller cavitation and is more efficient.  It also throws a big roostertail you probably would not want to ski behind it.

The exhaust from the engine will be routed directly out the transom, should sound good.

This may not be that easy to convert Pete. It looks like there are specific fittings that attach to the block.

What ever happened to Capt Rick? All we need is the name of the manufacturer that made them for Toyota.

I want to get this done before the corrosion starts surfacing ...

Pete, I have not. I want to verify from someone (hopefully Capt Rick) that the "V" setup can be converted / customized for the "D" boats.

I've tried calling a couple of companies that sell enclosed systems and when I tell them I have a Toyota engine... they go HUH??? ??? and are no help.

But, I am not giving up... I'll get one installed, sooner or later.

HCollado, I think the manufacturer is Monitor Products in Brooksville, Fl. www.monitorpro.com
Maybe someone with one installed could get you the model #.

Thanks for the info masonlk, Monitor was the company that manufactured the cooling system.

I spoke with a gentleman in their engineering department and he recalls making them for Toyota but it was 9 years ago. They no longer have any specs or ways of putting one together. He was very helpfull and explained that if I could send them pictures they would work in putting one together. I can only imagine the cost!!!

Get this, he remembers Toyota realizing that they would have to either switch to a cast engine or have every boat with an enclosed system to avoid the corrosion problem with an all aluminum engine. Toyota was already loosing money on the boats and to add a cooling system would put them further in the hole.

If there is someone out there that has one installed and could get pictures, we could see what it looks like, we could see if the "D" models fit.

Unfortunately, it looks like even Capt Rick has left us out in the cold on this one...

I don't know about all the rust fuss.  Seems like it is a new worry.  One guy has a rusty thermostat housing and now lots of folks are thinking cooling system.  I figure if my boat is never in the ocean, and I winterize and summerize, should be no problems.  I think I will pull the thermostat housing and take a look in there anyway before I put in this summer.  What I really need to do is install that dedicated ground. Gauges started acting up end of last season, and the ground seems to be the easiest first attempt at correction.  So.... you run a 12 gauge ground from the battery to.... what... where...?  I know just enough to blow it all up.  SOme specifics for a S22 would be great,...Anyone??

Happy New Year,

Breakawaydaze

Well I have been busy working as Service Director for Boat Dealer in Olrando.

Facts:
I just sold thermostate housing and a fresh water kit for Vdrive. There is still a heat exchanger available for Direct drive....
But there is a cheaper way to preserve any engine from the hazards of salt and tree acids in fresh water lakes.

Buy a kit called salt -away it is about $45.00 dollars and you flush the engine with it on a hose.

Remember Toyota Marine is closed..... This is a customer supported web forum.

wow.

Well, at 780 hrs in one lake in 7 yrs, I've used three impellers (third was 10hrs ago;) None were  cracked, I have both the two I pulled out and I'd put either back in in a pinch. There is a little, but not significant corrosion in my thermostat housing, I pull it every winter and drain that passage under the intake manifold.

I think that the excessive corrosion has to do with the water properties where you run the boat. Some western lakes used to be inland oceans, i.e. salt water, and my east coast man made lake used to be a mountain valley 30 yrs ago. Different deal. I think I'd want a closed loop cooling system out there.

The fresh water cooling system (closed loop) is not rocket surgery, its a tank with a coil in it, a couple of fittings, some hose, etc. And, directions with pictures that have been posted for years on this site. I doubt there are significant differences between the V drive and D drive systems, I think even the tank mounts in the same place.

Capt. Rick, to clarify: If someone orders a cooling kit for a V drive or D drive, can they get it? Or, are just pieces parts available?

Parts are on the way.  I am going to plug the hole in thermo with some JB weld or some other half-ass method and flush system.  Once flushed, I am going to install the new thermo housing and get ready for the warm weather to swing around again.  Good thing this happened now vs the middle of the summer.

It is weird, cause I had noticed the paint peeling on the bottom of the thermo housing for years, just thought it was from heat.  Never imagined it was corrosion.  I thought these things were bullet proof !  Live and learn.

Hey Cyclone, what about a new Thermostat?  Do I just go to parts store and get one for an LS 400?
