Block Drain
« on: October 05, 2006, 14:20:59 pm »
Hey guys,
I am winterizing my E22 and the block drain on the drivers side (10 mm nut) is stripped. What are my options to get the block drained?

Thanks

Try a pair of vice grips first

Vice Grips won't work either. Have any other suggestions. I even bought a small pair of vice grips to get in the small working space. Are there other ports to drain the block?

Can you take a pic of what you have?

You might want to try a Bionic Wrench or something similar if a standard box type wrench/socket can't get it because it is rounded.  I don't know if you could get it in there though.

It looks like the smallest Bionic wrench is 6". The work space is too tight. I have put a small vise grip on the petcock nut and banged it with a hammer. It only stripped it worse. Am I going to have to take the entire assembly off? It looks like I will have to take the manifold off to get at it.

Somebody help me! ???

I broke the head off the same brass bolt last year, but on the passenger side of my e21. Had to unscrew the whole petcock assy from the block and just replaced it. Cant remember if there is a petcock assy on the driver side or does the brass bolt go straight into the block? If there is a petcock assy, spray it with some thread penetrating anti-seize before you attack it with the pipe wrench!

A major pain! Those brass bolts are just too soft! Good luck!

Okay fellow Lexus marine engine owners. I took off the manifold on the drivers side so I could get at the stripped 10mm nut (petcock nut). I managed to get it off. What now? Can I get a new petcock nut, or do I need to get a whole new assembly. The little copper drain tube is no longer. It was broken off during the struggle. I don't think that will make any difference.

Any input will be appreciated.

tryme,

I saw a post from toyotafreak that mentioned a new gasket and new nuts! There was also some information about the torque requirements. Toyotafreak, if you read this, could you post the complete information on gasket installation/replacement? I put mine back together with the original gasket and nuts. I am going to order a new gasket and have it ready if there is a problem. Maybe someone with more experience (and ability) can give their thoughts on this.

I am planning on putting a new petcock nut into the existing fitting for next year. I am going to remove the nut completely each year and apply some lubricant to try and avoid the problem in the future. I am also thinking about just filling the block with anti-freeze through the water pump intake and being done with it. Any thoughts on that from the site.

I don't drain mine. I get the "water ready" winterizing. THere is some red juice like antifreeze that's biodegradable. RVs use it too.  so i just drop it in and fire it up come the beginning of the season.

I posted this on another tread, but.....

I removed the petcock and ran the hot water feed to my shower off that port so now all I have to do on that side is run the shower dry

2000epic,

I like it. I like it alot! I am assuming that the threads on the shower barb match the threads on the drain cock.

I do like the shower idea, but isn't that a little too warm?
