01 Blue X-22
« on: August 29, 2005, 03:18:52 am »
Fest and I were just at Marine Porducts in Salt Lake. We saw a blue X-22 on their for sale by owner board. I think they are asking too much, but its been for sale for a while. Perhaps they would come down. Jeremy over there also said there may be an SX available. Someone has said they want it but there is no formal committment yet.
03 Pilot, 01 Epic SX, 330 cc bombers and 4 kids in back. Working to retire to a lakeside cottage with my own boat dock.

Wow, this is my first post.  I hope I am doing it right.  The blue X-22 on the owner board in Marine Products is Salt Lake is a mystery.  The pictures are up, but the phone number listed as the contact information is now a non working number.  As far as the other X-22 goes it is a 99.  It is white with the black epic 22 markings.  It is extreemly clean!  It has a little over 120 hrs.  The guy just finished powder coating the trailer.  New covers, tower speakers and ridiculous sound system.  I am about 90% sure I am going to make an offer on the boat.  I think it could be had for 22 or 23 grand.  I am a previous owner of three MasterCraft boats.  My last was a 99' ProStar 205.  I am still just a bit freaked out about all the negative stuff dealers say about parts availability and crappy re-sale.
I am broke.

They are just trying to sell you a more expensive boat. You don't have anything to worry about parts wise. You can get any part on that boat. As for resale, they've dropped as much as they're going to, they sell for what a comparable boat of the same year does. The price will stay where it is or go up because of the phenomenally low gas useage. I was out this weekend 3 times, 3.1 hours on the hour meter. 7.076 gallons of premium. I had about 1200 lbs of weight and four to six people, depending. Do the math! 2.28 GPH.

Before I say this...Know that i am actively seeking an Epic...

However, I have heard from numerous dealers that the Epic boats are "underpowered"

Based on the weight of the boat and the size of the engine...And comparing it to other "like" boats I might think that the Epic may be a Tad underpowered...

Can anyone help with this?

But, I am still actively looking for one...

It depends on your definition. The boats are not as torquey as ones with a cast iron Detroit V8. They have plenty of horsepower, and you have to rev them hard if you are going to put 2k or more of weight in them, that's 2k of water weight in addition to passengers and gear. That I can say from experience. It's not a big deal, it just takes 10 sec or so to plane out. A different prop would help a LOT, I'm running a 4 blade OJ nibral 13x13, the 3 blade Acme is supposed to get out of the hole better.

If you run with normal weight and load, the boat has plenty of power and torque. You will see when you drive one.

They are less underpowered than a new Xstar with the base motor, I'll tell you that. There are a lot of relatively large boats (22-23 foot) that are equal in performance to the Epics, with the base motors. They have the option of upgrading motors, but at a high initial cost and higher operating cost.

See for yourself, go test drive some boats. Fill the ballasts and add a couple of sacks, see how they get out of the hole.

Well, I bought the black 99' X-22.  Less than 24hrs. later I had it in the water at Lake Powell for the Labor Day Weekend.  So far so good.  Absolutely no major problems.  I do need to replace a ballest pump but the owner had informed me of that problem.  It was no suprise.  The boat is very clean.  Very few imperfections.  I am still a bit freaked about resale but I have put that as-side.  As far as power goes.  I have to agree with Cyclone.  The boat seems pretty peppy to me.   It is faster than my last boat (99' MasterCraft ProStar 205 w/power slot) both on the top end and out of the hole.  And yes, the fuel efficiency was incredible.  I went with 3 other families and their boats were headed back to fuel twice as often, and it was not because of the tank size.   I was averaging a bit over 3 gallons per hour!  Nice little option to have when Marina fuel prices are at $3.79.

Anyway, I am now an owner and expect to use this website on a regular basis.

Thanks.
