Trailer Tire Discussion
« on: August 23, 2020, 23:58:45 pm »
What are you using for trailer tires and what is a reasonable cost?

There are a lot of tires out there and I am wanting to put new ones on for a trip I have coming up.

Thanks!

I'm debating doing wheels and tires at the same time, as the chrome wheels on my trailer are starting to feel dated.

Would also be interested to see what others have done

We recently decided to change the wheels and tires on our trailer. Swapped out the slightly rusty chrome wheels for black wheels and a set of new tires. Under $500 installed.

Wheels were about $155 after tax on eBay and the tires were $256 after tax on Amazon. Mounting and balancing was around $70. I'll update how the tires do.

Look for rub marks on the fenderwells, on the wood panel. It caused failure more than once before I figured out what was happening. I ended up putting spacers on both the fenderwell and each wheel. I had two ameratrail trailers over the years and both would rub even with trailer tires and proper inflation. I may have had a bent axle or two, they are wimpy on that trailer. Underinflation and auto tires with too much sidewall flex will rub and fail, fyi.

I bought 5 new wheels and tires at Walmart when I was in Destin, FL. Only $125 each (tire mounted on galvanized wheel). I'll be doing this every 5 years now lol.

UPDATE:  Took a trip from Ohio to Missouri and back with the new wheels/tires mentioned above. Everything is great. No rubbing, no issues. I think the black wheels are a nice update and match well with the trailer and boat graphics.

I went with the Heartlands from Discount tire. $450 out the door for 4 and have a 81 MPH speed rating. I called Big O and they tried to sell me a tire that was good for 110 MPH! I looked up the speed rating on the tire he wanted to sell me. 110KMH was the speed rating. Roughly 60MPH.

Discount got my business.

We'll see how they do on the drive back and forth to Powell.
