Leaking Transmission Fluid
« on: July 04, 2020, 15:42:03 pm »
Good morning everyone,

I finally pulled my epic out of storage after sitting since the winter '19 and on the drive back home I noticed red fluid coming from the stern drain port as I left the plug out. After getting home and removing the shrink wrap, sure enough, transmission fluid everywhere. I cleaned it up and poured more fluid in to see if I can see where it's coming from but nothing. I let it sit overnight and this morning I checked it appears to be coming from the shaft packing. There was no fluid anywhere else. Could that be right? Any thoughts what could be causing it? The only thing I could think of is maybe the engine moving out of alignment slightly putting pressure on the seal as the ride home (about 45 mins) was extremely bumpy due to all of the construction here in MI. I posted a picture if that helps.

!st check  outer seal  forward of coupling. Rotating and using bright led and wiping surface.
Remove the 4 bolts and nuts. Next slide coupling towards the stern of boat by rotating it.  notice if the shaft is aligned with the coupling. Look at inner seal next to nut. It also can come from hose or cooler.

Thanks Capt. Rick. I finally got around to working on the boat. Should the coupling come a part easily or will it take some brute force? I'm not sure if I showed try adding a screwdriver into the equation to help persuade it to move back. Also, the bolts were on there pretty loose i.e. not torqued down. I'm not sure if that's the way is was supposed to be. Another this I noticed was that one of the mounting bolts for the motor came loose and fell off. I don't know if that threw it off alignment and but stress on it which is causing it to leak. I'm sure that road to my BIL's house, where I store it, which is a dirt road and quite bumpy didn't help the fact.
