Fuel Pump Questions/Help
« on: June 04, 2018, 18:56:03 pm »
Happy spring everyone!

Hoping one of the experts can chime in and help with me a (fuel pump?) issue I had at the end of last year on my SX22.

When I went to start the boat on the trailer prior to winterizing it, it would fire, then idle really rough and die. This happened multiple times - Eventually I pinched the fuel line with vise grips (as per the instruction from Capt Rick) and it fired up and ran perfectly. It seems kind of odd that this didn't pop up until the very end of the season, and (fortunately) when the boat was on the trailer.

This leads me to believe I have a faulty fuel pump. If one has gone, I figure I'm best to replace both. I should have dealt with this over the winter, but I procrastinated and put it off until now... And now we're into prime boating season.

Questions:
1. Does anyone have a detailed step by step replacement procedure for fuel pumps on a v-drive boat?

2. Is there an off the shelf replacement/equivalent? I'm hoping to swap in the new pump(s) and get out on the water ASAP.

3. Could this be anything other than a faulty fuel pump? I'm at around 750 hours.

Thanks!

Take off the fuel pump assembly. separate the pumps from the assembly. Look for stamped part numbers or engravings on the pump body. 99% sure they are Bosch and can be sourced with some decent google searches. Post picks of the pumps and markings and I can try to help out.

Can the fuel pump assembly be removed on a v-drive without removing the port side exhaust manifold? I took a quick look at it tonight and it looks pretty tight. It looks like there might just be enough room to get it between the manifold and the square edge of the engine compartment. Can it be done?

Also, could this be related to the intermittent start problem I posted last year: http://www.epicmarine.com/forum4/index.php?topic=2739.msg20440#msg20440

The odd (and I think key) component to the problem I had last year was that when the crank but no start situation occurred, the ignition buzzer did not sound.

When I experienced this latest issue, the buzzer did sound, and the boat would fire, run very rough, and then die.

The buzzer sounding vs not sounding leads me to believe that two separate issues are present: 1. the fuel pump, and 2. the relay.

Thoughts?

I suggest removing each pump without removing manifold. No reason to buy assembly. Start with the bug nut on fuel line up to rail. then the bracket clamps that hold pump and loosed phil screw clamps.

Relays can be swapped to see if thats the issue

So it appears that my issue was not the fuel pump after all. I believe it was a failing battery that caused my problems at the end of last year. My battery bank has two batteries that serve the boat (starting, blower, bilge, etc), and I think at least one was starting to experience issues. My theory is that with having two boat batteries, they provided enough current to actuate the starter, however not enough voltage to properly run the ECU.

I put two new batteries in my SX22 this year, and after sitting all winter, it fired up first crank and ran perfectly on the trailer. I put it in the water and racked up about 3 or 4 hours last weekend and it ran flawlessly.

Hopefully my problem is solved and my SX is ready for another 100 hour season!
