Does 170 degree thermostat dictate what plug to use?
« on: January 10, 2018, 00:46:05 am »
I recently changed to the Stant 14077 for the upcoming season and will also be changing out plugs before the season, too.  I've been using the cheap autolite 3923's and changing annually but does running a bit hotter change anything regarding how the plugs perform?  Should I go back to the iridium now that it will run a bit hotter or just stick with 3923's?

Thanks,
-BJ

Its my understanding that:

-Iridium is designed for 120K mileage intervals in a closed loop fuel system. epics do not have a closed loop fuel system (no o2 sensor feedback).

-The 160 degree thermostat makes our boats run rich. Rich makes good power but also fouls plugs especially if your using anything other than 91 or higher octane. Running a toyota tundra 4.7L standard plug with a much larger electrode area or similar prevents the fouling

I would think your slightly hotter engine would run a bit leaner and therefor foul plugs less but why bother switching and risk it ?

won't cheap big electrode plugs still work fine ?

On the boats I try to replace each year because there is no O2 sensor, so the plugs will foul from over-fueling.
Yes I use Autolight 3923.
