2000 s22 trouble after timingbelt change

read a lot of post and have not seen definitive conclusions.
please help.
replaced timing belt. tensioner. pulleys. plugs. thermostat. all Lexus dealer parts. rebuilt sea water pump. and things are weird. no trouble codes.

pulled it apart and checked belt and it looks ok

motor runs perfect at start up with hose attached. gets up to temp 160 degrees and starts to surge or timing advances and it stutters. It does this at idle and at higher rpms in nuetral

have not run it on lake yet. any thoughts.

Could be the throttle body, it changes behavior as it warms up. When the belt was done on my boat and the timing was off it ran rough all the time. The way I diagnosed it was the CEL and a compression check. One bank was 20lbs lower than the other.

thanks for that. the butterfly does seem loose and rattles a little. I ran some sea foam through it although after the above symptoms were present.

!st clean Mass air flow sensor. Mark which was it is installed. Put new spark plugs.


XXXXXX Make sure the person who did the timing belt did it right XXXXX But if the engine runs and doesnt have the piston hit the head.... your Ok

Note that it will run with one head 10 degrees off. But it idles super super rough.  Thats how far mine was off. Ran much better after the timing was fixed.

First-  If the motor runs perfect at start up its NOT the timing belt.

need more info now,

Was the boat running normal before the work was done?

1. did you get your therrmostat from a Lexus dealer? if so its most likely a car thermostat rated at 180 degrees which is not ok on this engine.

2. Did you remove and clean the MAF sensor? you may have installed it backwards ( i did this a few year ago it had symptoms like your having

3. Does your boat have a closed cooling system?

4. Does the throttle plate have carbon buildup around the edges?

5. did you disconnect the temp sensor by any chance?

6. you need to check for codes ( i will post how on another topic, its good info everybody should have) remember if you disconnect the battery or shut off the perko switch all codes will be erased. Run the boat until you have a problem shut it off, turn it to accessory and check for codes. they will flash like old school toyota 2 digit codes.

you said you ran it with the hose attached, are you getting water out the exhaust? can you touch the manifolds where the exhaust hoses attach once its warmed up? should be warm but able to keep your hand on them without burning you hands.

thanks everyone got it fixed. new plugs and reset the timing belt ensuring it was on perfect. everything is good now
