They collapse internally after years of hot water running thru them.

Then, the system backs-up and water ends up getting into the cylinder thru the exhaust valves.

Then, the engine is ruined, then you kick yourself in the ass, then you tow the boat to the middle of the lake and you sink it.

How do you know when they need to be replaced? Is it just a precaution connected to a certain amount of hours?

age and hours I would guess.

I've had the boat since new and have close to 600 hours. I am more concern about the age of the hoses than anything.

Will have to think on that. Opening her up for timing belt this weekend. Now would be the time... Not happy that the corners of the trunk lid are cracked. Really don't want to open up the vinyl.

Here's my two-bits on two exhaust hoses: anyone who still  has the original exhausts hoses in their boat is operating on borrowed time. I was absolutely aghast when I pulled mine. They looked and felt firm/healthy and from the outside. Where in reality inside they were delaminating... the inner skin is pulling loose from the hose. I'd estimate the flow was restricted to under half.

A new quality hose is a stiff, tough animal to cut and finesse into place. But a whole lot easier than dealing with an overheating engine. When cutting them to length, be sure to account for the radius (curve bends) needed for final placement.

I finally had a chance to get down to my boat and take a look at the hoses.

I think MHO001080003   (Hose,Exhaust,3"x4",S,SX22,PreCut,Black,Wire   21) is a typo and should actually be 3"x14".

I found a local supplier and cost is about $20 CDN a foot. Hoping to tackle this on the weekend. I'm going to attempt to replace all of the hose, including the big 4" pieces.

Has anyone replaced the 4x17" piece that goes from the motor mount to the transom? It looks like if I remove the exhaust outlet from the rear of the boat, it should allow the hose to be easily replaced.

Ditto to set and frugal. Replace the top two and bottom two hoses. They delaminate esp when you run hot. Sometimes, if you squeeze the ones off the exhaust manifolds with channellocks, they are crunchy. Not good. I can measure mine tomorrow and take pix. I'm gonna go sit in the boat now, put two minnows on a crappie rig and see whats what here in a min;)

Finally had time to tackle this job on Monday.. Here are my thoughts and tips:

Overall it wasn't that bad. It's still not fun though. I've got about 725 hours on my SX and my hoses weren't in too bad of shape. The pieces that attach to the manifolds had no blockage or delamination, however they were starting to get a little crunchy. The pieces that go from the elbows to the muffler were starting to bubble and delaminate on the inside. They weren't too bad yet, but I suspect that they would continue to deteriorate and require replacing within the next year or two.

The larger 4" hose from the muffler to the back of the boat was in great shape.. I even stuck an inspection camera down the length of the hose to ensure it was ok.

I was able to purchase the replacement hose from a local retailer for about $20 CDN a foot. If you tackle this job, make sure you get marine rated hose. I think the rating was J2006R1 for the non-wire and J2006R2 for the wired. The shop I bought from initially tried to sell me generic "rad" hose and said it was basically the same hose and would be good enough, however without the marine rating on the hose, I expect the insurance company may take issue if a problem was ever caused by the hose.

I found that a oil filter wrench helped to twist the hoses off the manifolds and that dumping some hot water on the hose helped it to flex in and out of position. I also dumped some dish soap/water onto the hoses to help them slide on and off the manifolds/muffler. It also helped to have a second person there to pull on the hose as I pushed/twisted.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask!
