GPS For Speedos
« on: September 30, 2014, 22:34:32 pm »
Hi Everybody,

So tired of not having reliable speedos. So.. does anybody know where I can purchase a GPS system to replace the unreliable water pick-ups. In installing this system will I have to reprogram the computer?

Also, I have an 1999 X22. My truck lid gas springs are gone. Anybody know which one to order? I have studied the drawings but I can't conclude which one to get.

Thanks!

I need the same information...

Also, Capt Rick has a good idea about getting a Speedo app and just getting a mount for your phone to put on the dash. Cheap and easy.

Hey Capt. Rick & Guppy,

Thanks for the info about the gas springs but let's say I'd really like to keep those specific speedos operational where can go to get such a system outside the quick and dirty choice?

Thank you for your time.

Perfect Pass makes a GPS speedometer with or without speed control.  The one without speed control is fairly reasonably priced and comes in the correct size.  It is called Precision Star.  Here are a few links:

Hi Echelon73,

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out. I once saw a system that worked with the MDCC in which all you had to do was mount that puck and plug a wire harness where the speedos go to the MDCC and that was that. Maybe they don't make it anymore.

Tx!

I'm not sure about the one that works with MDCC.  I am pretty sure all the Precision Star needs is power and ground wires.  I think it uses a small antenna (that can be hidden) to get the GPS signal to measure speed.

I have the precision star and the antenna is built in ( no puck required ).  Only 3 wires need to be hooked up - 12V power, ignition, and ground.  It fits right in the dash so I put it in the center and moved the tach to the left.

Have you seen this product from Nautic Laugic? It plugs inline and converts your existing speedo into a GPS one. It allows you to completely remove the pitot assembly.. I almost installed one of these last spring. Only reason I didn't was I was unsure whether I want to keep the speedo when I add perfect pass or not.

http://www.nauticlaugic.com/NL2.html

I spoke with the owner of the company in the spring and he said he used to own an Epic and that is why he originally developed this product.

Hi Supraman,

Yes!  Tthis is what I was looking for. I want to keep the speedos I have but just do away with the mechanical pick-ups.

Will check out th site and perhaps next season I will get to go without any more cloggs.

Tx!

Hey all,

For sure I still have my 2000 X22, and its NL2 GPS speedometer upgrade has been bulletproof for the last five seasons.

I can't emphasize enough the need to protect your MDC Dash computers... It's not a matter of IF but WHEN moisture from the pitot hoses will penetrate into the MDC. Every year Nautic Laugic gets more and more inquiries regarding MDC failures. A GPS upgrade is excellent insurance for your MDC, so you can unplug those pitot's; and remember to cork the hoses so they don't leak your boat.

The pic is of my PP install. It also is fed from the same GPS.

Installed one of these a couple of years ago in about 30 minutes including the calibration. Speed holds steady and dead on when checked against another GPS. It was a bonus to disconnect those pitot hoses and stop worrying about water in the MDC.
