Anyone have video of how much water comes out the exhaust?
« on: September 23, 2014, 15:11:15 pm »
The exhaust headers on my boat are a bit hot to the touch in a couple of places, which generally means that the headers are beginning to fail. I'm planning on inspecting/repairing them at the end of the season, but wanted to verify that I don't have a problem that needs to be fixed now. Does anyone have a video showing how much water exits the boat when it's running on a trailer with a fake a lake so I can compare it to my boat?

On a side note, the headers are supposed to be made of stainless steel, can anyone validate that? Mine definitely appear to be, but it's hard to tell under all that black paint.

The Epic's cooling system is very similar to other inboards ( Malibu, Ski Nautique, etc. ).  This should give you an idea of how much water should be coming out - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjMCTg_f8Bw.  I usually just check the hose coming out the top of the raw water pump to check that water is flowing, you should be able to feel the cold water flowing through there.

I'm not an expert on the exhaust mainfold thing, but I'm pretty sure they are not solid stainless steel and it may just be the water jackets that are lined with stainless which would explain why they are painted.  From what I've read the biggest problem you can have with the mainfolds is they can eventually leak on the inside and water can get back in the engine causing problems.  I've never checked mine since it seems to mainly be a problem on boats with lots of hours ( > 1000 ).

Perfect Thanks! I'm getting at least that much water. I guess I'm used to my mercruiser IO which used to dump out tons of water at idle.
