Cooling Water in the transmission
« on: October 11, 2007, 00:23:52 am »
Is there any, if so, do you have to drain it before winter.  There is nothing in the winterization about it.  I noticed cooling lines going to it.  Thanks Bart

there is a drain bolt on the bottom of it.  If you dont drain it it will rot out like mine did and put water into the tranny... not good...

take pics and we can update the winterization procedure. Manual says nothing about it though, plus for all us antifreeze guys, it would still rot out as water would sit in it??

I just go an X22 and I saw a repair was done to my trani cooler.  I will have a look and pull it out to see if water is in there.  I think it will be dry because the hoses seam to bring trani fluid up to the water manifold under the port side exhaust pipe.  This should be a sealed system so when you drain the sea strainer the water should be removed from this area.  I would imagine there is a possbility that a crack from age could allow fluid into the trani.  Mine has a liquid metal weld (aluminum paste you apply) on the outside of it, so my guess is it cracked.  I will get a welder to fix it properly and post a report on what I see.

Cheers,

It's in the Toyota maintenance bulletin.  #45 S22 and SX Engine winterization.

"...remove the sea striner and hose from the thru hole fitting to after the sea strainer, as shown below, left.  Be sure to allow water to be drained out of the transmission cooler."
