Gauge Ground Wire upgrade.
« on: September 25, 2007, 22:19:44 pm »
Does anyone know on an X22 where to rune the new ground wire from.  The negative battery post is one end and the other end is not clear?  I could not find a common ground for the gauges.  I, and several other people have inaccurate reading on our gauges and need to modify the ground.

I can splice into each ground wire on each gauge, but that seems to be the hard way of getting this done.

I will take pictures and publish this upgrade for other owners once I am done.  The season is over for me now so I will be concentrating on the boat maintenance.

Thanks,
Hungry Man.

This is for 2000 model year and up. Run 8 guage wires from battery negative post to DECC negative terminal. Run 12v B+ from battery switch to positive terminal on DECC. Do not run from battery positive terminal or the DECC will always have power and will eliminate your battery off switch. Here is a bad pick of the DECC connections. Hope this helps.

How do the wires run for all of us with a 1999 boat, perhaps, well...say a 1999 E21 just as an example-

Sorry Wreck- the 99's are a little more difficult. They do not have a DECC, so there goes the easy connections. I never did the upgrade on my 99 E22. My guages didn't bother me as much as my SX's did. Nevertheless if you want I can take a look at the wiring schmatic and tell you where you could splice in a better power and ground. It may not give you the results that those of us with millenium dashes experience.

I did this job on my 1999 Epic 21. Not very hard to do. The MDC should be located on the left kick panel by the drivers foot. Much easier to do if you remove the drivers seat.

Maintenance
# Troubleshooting Guide - MDC

I the Maintenance section under maintenance Trouble shooting guide MDC The last 2 pages show you the wiring. I ran the positive from the Perko switch (main battery disconnect) & the negative straight to the battery negative. I cut the original ground & positive wires about 8-10 inches away from the connector and connected the new wires to them. Remember to fuse your positive wire near the Perko switch. Let me know if I can be of any more assistance to you.

Sailtl, thanks for the info.

I agree with Wakejunky - the guages haven't been that big an issue. I never have any alarms go off. The oil guage is a sporatically funky but I figure that is the sender. There is an issue with the blower (before and after installing a new, quieter blower) since there is a loud interference if the radio/CD is on at the same time and the temp guage runs way high if it is on but, again, nothing that gives me heartburn. At some point I hope to address it since I prefer things to be right but my non-marine "to do" list is pretty exhaustive right now.
