wont start dang diddily ang it!
« on: August 08, 2007, 20:55:10 pm »
So, Ive got a two battery set up in the SX. Went to start it yesterday and it wouldn't. All the gauges go on, the siren sounds, etc, but all I hear from the engine sounds like the solenoid going click once. I charged both batteries last night and tried it today with the same result. Whaddya think? What's my problem? Bad starter? Bad battery? bad batteries? I'm relying on you boat Gods for help. Should I take it to checker and have them run that battery, starter, alternator check they do? I'm clueless.

Make sure the leads on the battery are clean and tight, and the same at the starter alternator.I had this problem not long ago and the connections were loose at the ignition switch.Did you make sure the boat is in neutral.

After checking connections, take to Les Schwab and have them check the battery(s). They will give you a yay or nay on if the battery is shot and they have replacements.

I would also check and make sure it is in neutral.  I have tried to start my boat on more than one occasion and had to take it out of neutral and back.  May be worth trying before you take your battery all over town.  When a cell of my battery died, I got a lot of blinking lights and obvious indications.  When I just get one click, it normally means I need to re-neutralize the throttle.

Thanks guys, I tried all that except Les Schwab. I also hooked it up to my portable jumper cable thing. With that hooked up it started right up.

It's probably a bad battery or two. Get them tested at an auto parts store.

So, I Les Schwabed it and the batteries were fine. I checked connections to the batteries and key switch, all seemed fine. As for checking the starter and alternator connections, I'm just too dumb. I know what/where they are on my car, but couldn't even locate em in the Epic. Took it to Marine Products and the first time Jimmy turned the key it started. He messed around with it a bit and it started about one in every five times he tried it. He suspects the starter which he said is tough to get to. No boat for the next week or so. I'll keep you posted on what he finds. Thanks for the help.

Just an update. Had the boat at Marine Products for a couple days and they could not find anything wrong with it. It started everytime they turned the key. That's the way it always is isn't it? Anyway, brought it home and had sporadic starting. Wouldn't start five times then would start 20 times, then not start a few times, then start again. I decided to spend 20 dineros and buy a new ignition switch and put it in. That was it. Has run and started like a champ ever since. By the way, Ignition switch from Toyota was 35 bucks plus shipping. It is an off the shelf switch you can get anywhere. My new one was 20 bucks including the tax.
