Managed to gain a little more insight verbally, but still waiting to see this boat.

It is a 1999 Epic 21 300VTi (should have the hull ID tomorow).

Symptoms;

Cranks over but does not fire.

When key is turned to cranking position, the gauges peg full over. (thinking grounding issue?)

Owner seems to believe no spark noticed when he checked it.

I agree with the bad juju when using starting fluid! Point well taken... One of the questions I'm still trying to put an answer to still, Does the computer/ECM need specific marine type software scan tool or will automotive work? The owner has connected an automotive OBD II scanner and received an error message but it didn't indicate anything else or throw any codes.

Thanks for the responses.

Scott

I have same year and model. It could be so simple as the wires at the neutral saftey switch at the throttle lever. Gages will peg until it starts.

As I understand it, the neutral safety switch would not allow the motor to crank over. The emergency kill switch has been checked and is not the problem.

The gauges pegging full to the right/clockwise while cranking the engine over until it starts is normal?

I think you need the marine specific scan tool, all the codes and tests for all sensors are in the engine manual which you can order from the TMS parts link at the top of the page.

I would check the fuel pressure and clean the screen in the fuel pump, swap the fuel filter/water separator, pull a plug out of the head and check for spark. It's probably something simple.

You have to start checking for fuel, spark and air. Which don't you have? Should have air or we are all in trouble.
