Speedometer pitot pickups
« on: July 11, 2007, 02:38:40 am »
Hey everyone, so after 2 outing on the lake without any reading on the speedos (both), I checked in the back and found that BOTH lines are broken, and 1 is completely missing (ie ripped off)!  Needless to say I want to fix this asap, but will damage be done to wherever the lines go to b/c of the water getting in? Basically Im worried as they went into storage fine but it was outside (covered in a steel barn, but not heated) and froze if Im going to have to replace the brass parts in the truck area.

I am guessing the only damage will be to the pitot tubes at the back... a quick visual check of the brass tubes will tell you if they are cracked from freezing and expansion. On my first Epic, it appeared they had water follow the speedo hoses and go right to the electronic module under the dash and expand to break off both connections. I was able to quickly identify the manufacturer off the  back and order the new module over the internet... I bet your repair will be limited to a couple of replacement black units that sit at the  back in the water... pitot tubes aren't they?

I am needing one of those brass tubes if anyone knows where to get one. The Epic I first purchased had both frozen... one expanded and remained sealed... the other not so fortunate. Then I gave it to someone who was going to repair it for me and they lost it... whoops. I have looked around at boat shops here in Alberta to purchase a replacement and they look at me with a puzzled look on their faces then mutter something about it being Toyota... seems about the only part that I have had any difficulty getting replaced. Suggestions on where to get one?

Its only the black speedo tubing, the pitots are fine.  Im just worried about replacing the brass pieces, they look expensive...

Thanks I will do that next time Im at CDA so I can dig into the boat.  Left it over there for my B-Day last sunday as it would be really expensive to bring it back to Seattle for a day of boating (think 2 tanks of gas easy @ ~$55 a tank).  Also plan to buff the gelcoat and remove all the little scratches that have accumulated over the years.

You can fix the brass cylinders with JB weld, works like a charm

Hi Pete,
I had one of my brass cylinders split (before I got the boat), gave it to a person that thought he could repair it. He lost it... gone. Can I possibly create one of these units using 3/4" copper pipe? They seem to be just hollow tubes... Can I buy them anywhere? Hate having one speedo dead...

Also, I just sold my Epic 21 this past week... for a while I had very little interest from my advertising...then all of a sudden, I had 5 guys on. In fact, one was mad at me for selling it to another person eventhough he had not asked me to hold it for him. That now leaves me with the X22. We had a blast with that boat last year... family of 6 kids here and we all miss it... it being that particular boat. Funny of how owning it for a year and a half got us so attached to it. The new owners are replacing a 1980's i/o with the Epic... they are in for a treat when they get it to the lake. I never registered the boat nor posted a picture on the site... will try to post a picture soon. Wish I had taken a pic of both boats together. Funny thing, up here in Alberta, we took the boat to the lake to show it to someone, there was another Epic on the lake (Eric from the site) and another parked in a lift that lives on the lake... we nearly had the northwest roundup without trying.

Great site this one... has been a valuable resource. Thanks
