Prop for SX
« on: July 17, 2011, 05:48:15 am »
There isn't much info on the forum for props on the SX model so I thought I would report on my new prop. I just got an Acme 515 and was amazed at the difference of power out of the hole. I slalom ski once in a while and I can say that it is a night and day difference. I was a little disappointed in the top speed which dropped to 37mph at about 6100 rpms.

I took my boat back to precision propeller and they added additional cupping which seems to have added a few more miles per hour at the top end.

We still need to meet up one of these days! Was just in CDA last weekend and put like 6-8 hours on the Epic.  Most use its gotten in over a year. :(  Dropped to 37 mph? What was it before?  I think I remember seeing my E22 hit 47-48 with the stock OJ.

What are the specs on that prop, I think I put a 641 on my E22 and its a HUGE improvement over the stock OJ.  Top speed is about the same, might have lost 1-2mph at the top end.  Holeshot is incredible even with 8 people in the boat pulling a wakeboarder.  With 4 in the boat and pulling me out of the water, Im coming out just a little slower than my friends 97 MC PS205 with the 5.7L LT1 V8 and a nasty 4 blade.  Plus that prop will still turn 6000rpms with half a tank of gas and 4 guys in it.  In 3 weeks Ill break out my phone, both my speedo pitots are messed up.

Alright I dont see an edit button, kinda annoying.

I have a 541 prop, not a 641.

The v-drives have a lower gear ratio.  I also have been checking my speed with a gps app on my iphone which is probably not very accurate.  Perfect Pass just came today FedEx, so I will be able to get a more accurate speed in a few days.

Let me know when you will be in town next.  We usually go to Roosevelt, Hayden or Spirit Lake but we will cruise down to Windy Bay if we happen to be going out on a weekday.

Yep, I think my E22 has the 1.23:1 ratio? Dont some of the E21, E22s come with like 1:1, some with 1.23:1, and the v-drives like 1.48:1?  Just trying to remember, those might be WAY off ha.

Be back for sure the night of August 5th and stay thru the 7th.  Believe it or not, never actually been on any of the lakes around there except for Coeur d'Alene.  Always wanted to, maybe I can convince the fam to pull the boat early on the 6th and head up to Hayden or Spirit.  Work M-F, so we can only sneak out from Seattle on the weekends.

I switched to a acme 449 this year from the 13.5 stainless 4 blade.  Reasonably happy with the props performance at 1100 feet elevation. With a load of around 1200 pounds the RPM will reach just shy of 6100,  with less load it hits the limiter.  Speed is indicated as 38 MPH but this is the factory speedo /ddu readout.  Feel that that the boat could use a little more aggressive prop 13x13 (0.080) might be perfect.  Holeshot with 1500 lbs ballast was very good.

Good info even if its old:) I have to floorboard my SX to get it out of the hole then back way off, this is with full stock bsllast plus /00lbs of lead under front seats or it porpoises.

I'm gonna upgrade the stock OJ nibral prop this spring for the up coming Summer of Compleat and Total Awesomeness now that I'm on the lake:)))))

Good to be back:)

fyi the SX has a different gear ratio in vdrive and requires different prop than s22.

Sssssssssooo I got cocky driving around the lake at night and got stuck in a mudbank. Busted up my OJ a bit, one deep gelcoat scratch, other than that I say thank GOD he takes care of babies and fools. Everything is straight under there and I filled the gelcoat scratch and a couple of others from indiscriminate beach operations.

So I pinged Capt Rick about the oddball 13x14 3 blade that is listed as being correct for a 1.46/1 (sx) transmission. No response from him so I went to Acme and procured the 449. 13x12.625 with .080 cup.
Holy crap! Different boat. So much more torque and throttle response at boarding speed!

I am cautiously super optimistic about this prop!

That's the same prop that I have at elevation.  I agree, so much better than the original!

It feels like 100 extra hp, its just incredible how much better this thing works. I think it had the standard S22 prop on it, definitely not suited to this transmission. The boat sounds different (much throatier) and just pulls at low rpm and throughout the towing range. Huge improvement in every department. Same top speed, 36 and change. But I don't go that fast and this thing works down low.

OK, well I bought that one oddball factory OJ prop for a great price from Vintage parts. It is 13x14 heavy cup (.120ish) heavily worked. It is a great prop for this boat. It flexes and cavitates and acts like a mini clutch, helps out of the hole tremendously. The boat STEERS better with this traditionally shaped prop. I thought I had a steering cable issue with the Acme. Nope. It just works differently with the rudder. In a negative way.
SO, don't forget OJ Props, talk to them if you need a prop for an SX with 1.46. I am at 1071 ft alt.
