2001 x22 ballast pump
« on: March 14, 2019, 22:25:29 pm »
Hey everyone. I have a ballast pump related question. I’m in the middle trying to figure out a rats nest wiring problem and figure it’s easiest to start getting rid of items. The previous owner said the ballast doesn’t fill with one pump and needs two. Looking more into this it looks like there are three pumps total to fill. One has a relay issue, one turns on and one doesn’t seem to anything at all. Am I safe to assume one pump should be able to fill a thousand pound bag in the rear trunk? I really want to clean up this wiring. The after market heater is in this mess as well. Just looking for some input. Oh and what size thru hull valve is needed so I can install one of those as well.

The ballast systems were a moving target and were constantly evolving. You may have had a Jabsco impelller pump in the bilge or in the storage compartment. The water usually enters via a hull fitting forward of the battery, that's the first place to start.

I'd recommend you replace the system with something from Wakemakers or another vendor, they can help. You can use the existing hoses and wiring, switches etc.

I appreciate your feedback but I guess I’m just trying to confirm that the ballast system originally had only one pump. It does have a pump in the storage locker. It’s a Impeller style pump. Just making sure before I tear all the old wiring and simply re wire that one pump to factory wiring so I can still use the buttons on the dash.

My X22 has two pumps. One in the storage locker near the bow to fill and the other in the bilge near the soft ballast in the boot to empty. I have rule pumps. I believe the jabsco is reversible and only uses one pump.

My boat had one jabsco pump initially in the storage area but it really never worked. So, we did all the ballast TSB's and relocation suggestions in the maintenance sections and switched to two rule 1100 pumps. One is attached to the thru-hull seacock in front of the battery to fill and one is back near the H-pipe/exhaust in the back of the bilge. Seems to work better. As for the wiring, I think ours was changed when the ballast TSB work was done, around 2008.

Mine is like KTdust pumps. I have one for filling by where the battery is, and one for emptying back by the shower. I had to use my shower power to power the empty as something went wrong finally with the empty switch. But it works..

So I appreciate all info given  When I said three pump in to fill I truly mean three pump just to fill. One off the thru hall, one about a foot away on intake hose, and third in the trunk. All those hooked to same hose to fill. Why would someone do that.

Its an interesting system too say the least. Or shall I say systems. Very little consistency, I think it was evolving rapidly.

I'm guessing the pumps are aerator pumps?

My SX had a pump on the thru hull and then another pump a foot from it, then into the tank. One was a fill pump (on the thru hull) and the other is the empty pump. It actually worked well, you would think running through the opposite pump would be a restriction but it wasn't much. It allowed for a single fill and drain hose and thru hull, it had a separate vent on the side of the boat.

I actually used this setup when I redesigned the system and added a bow bag.

I would check how each pump is mounted (direction of flow) and post back. depending on the length from the thru hull to the bag and the flow rate it may have needed both pumps. I upgrade the pumps to 1100 gph and hoses to 1" and it easily filled a 500lbs bag in 5-6 minutes.

Dont know if this will help or confuse. Check the second page for how I setup a bow bag with fill and drain pumps on the same hose. http://www.epicmarine.com/forum/index.php?topic=1320.0

aerator pumps are super fast and efficient, but and a BIG but they have to be positioned properly or they will air lock.

Impeller pumps are slow and burn up impellers if left on, but they never air lock

Probably why you have an impeller pump added to the system
