Possible overheat

1999 Epic 22. No good deed goes unpunished when I towed a crippled boat back to marina for less than 15 minutes at no wake speed. Gauge shot to 240 degrees. Immediately stopped, opened engine cover. Waited 30 mins. Visual inspection, looked fine. Resumed at 160 degrees, then the temp gauge would flutter between 160 and 240. Limped back at low speed stayed at 160 Boat drove the same. What should my next steps be? Themostat, hoses, nothing? Thoughts?

check for obstructions in water intake, if clear. replace impeller. How old is the impeller?

Thank you. I bought the impeller and some sockets. I'll check. I'm struggling to have a manual for the 1999 Epic 22 (non S), and direct drive.

Impeller was replaced last year and I have healthy maintenance records from MNinboards.com.


I even have old impellers. Only put 20 hours on boat max. It drove flawlessly to 44 mph on glass before towing for a blip.

Is it going straight from 160 and pinging to 240 and back? Unless you disconnected your alarm (and assuming everything is working) you should hear beeping for a true over temp condition.

If you've never changed the thermostat, it's an easy and cheap project for peace of mind.

I would say check it again tomorrow after it's completely cool. I don't think towing at no wake speed put any abnormal stress on the motor. If you're experiencing same issues, follow wakejunky's advice.
