Pulleys-Do these need replacing?
« on: November 24, 2014, 22:26:01 pm »
So I have been taking apart things such as the sea water pump and I am in process of removing the thermostat housing and thermostat. In the process the serpentine belt has to be loosened so I did that...the pulleys that hold the belt are rusted/discolored under the belt. Do I need to replace these? Fine sand them and repaint? Just fine sand? Leave them alone? You can see the discoloration in the pictures. Thanks for the help in advance. I am also attaching a pic of the impeller I just pulled out...I am about 100% sure it is not supposed to look like this..

I personally don't like rust on this killer Lexus engine, even if it is a tensioner and water pump pulley.  I'd consider lightly sanding the bottom side with the engine running to knock off the rust and pull the part off to put a little prime & paint on it.  The idler doesn't look rough enough to damage the back-side of the serpentine belt too bad.  Aluminum, plastic or stainless pulleys that don't rust would be nice.

Other than the impeller looking old and the fins permanently deformed in the position it apparently sat for a long time, it doesn't have chunks out of the fins and they're not cracked.  If run very long I'd imagine it'd come apart pretty soon.  Certainly not worth the risk.  Great idea to change it....

I was thinking the same thing...a little sanding and some primer/paint to make it look like when it comes from the factory (all black) The belt looks good so it appears it hasn't caused any damage, but I agree with you I hate to see any rust or worn spots anywhere. It is just one more place for bad things to happen. I assume any kind of marine spray paint would do the trick? I have seen lots of them online anyone ever used one that worked really well? I found a few other spots that need repainted where the paint is chipped off or a little rust starting to develop. I want to paint/cover as many of those spots as I possibly can.

So I pulled the thermostat housing and a bunch of other parts and I see paint chipping off in lots of places around the back (v-drive) of the engine. I bought moeller high gloss black marine spray paint and started with the thermostat housing...I thought some of you might want to see what it looks like. The paint works great...I suggest spraying it twice (2 coats) on the spots where the paint has been chipped off...I sprayed the housing twice as seen in these pictures...Check out the before and after...I would say this paint works very well. I am going to do several other parts of the engine where the paint is chipping I was so satisfied. Tip: when you spray it, let it spray for about a half second longer than you think so it makes it kind of thick, but not runny...that first coat will soak right in, then the second spraying will coat it nicely.

I am going to work on some of the other areas here in the next couple of weeks or so if the weather cooperates. We had some crazy warm weather so I did some painting....It might be a while however...but I'll at least get some "before" pics of the areas that need painting. As for the pulleys, well I decided to replace the ones I could. So I ordered 2 new ones, I am looking for one more and I'll have to paint one of them. I'll try to remember the before/after pics for that too...Thanks for the kudos on the paint job, it was super satisfying to see that turn out so well.
