2000 X22 Ballast Questions
« on: August 15, 2007, 00:16:47 am »
I have a 2000 X22 with the factory ballast.  Even when full and loaded with 5 people (about 1000 lbs) its still not enough wake.  I am curious what are you guys using to ballast these boats?  Maybe a front sack?  More weight in the back?  Anybody have any ideas?
I am not expecting the wake of a malibu with a wedge and ballast but its hard for me to launch myself with a pretty flat wake and it doesnt help that i am about 240lbs... I appreciate any input so dont be bashful to comment...
Thanks!
Mike

I recommend a 750 in the walk thru. That will make the wake MUCH bigger. I had a Skylon locker sack in the trunk that I filled to the point that it would push on the trunklid, and a 750 in the walkthru, wake was beautiful. Cal is running some extra sacks in his X22, hopefully he'll post some pics of his setup.

I don't have any pics of my setup.  But if you want BIG, open your wallet and call Fly High.   :)

Most of the time I run with 5+ people in my boat and run just my custom 850-pounder in the trunk.  With just the trunk sack full, I usually wil shift a few fatter passengers to the back, and throw a skinny or two in the bow.  But when we have less people, I'll fill a couple side sacks and a bow sack.

Here's my setup:
1) Get the custom trunk sack ordered by me (PM me and I'll give you my full name and they can look-up my order).  About 850 lbs in the trunk.  Should cost around $270, and matches-up perfectly with the stock valve locations.
2) Two Fly High v-drive sacks (fit perfectly on either side of the engine). About 550lbs each.  $180ish.
3) A 300-400 lb. sack for the forward walkthrough.  Mine is stock Fly High that was pulled out of a Mobius LSV and fits perfect.  Could get a custom one made for $150ish.

With all full, it totals around 2300 lbs in water-ballast.  And even with 7 people in the boat, she gets out of the hole without a problem -- maybe takes 5-7 seconds to get onto a plane?

2300 lbs in ballast + 7 people? It's the total capacity of the X22 1600lbs? I guess there is a huge safety factor in that 1600 lb number?

You can run 2k with no problem in an Epic with the stock prop, but it will be a dog out of the hole. Get an Acme and you are good to go.

If you go into the photos and look at the NW Roundup you'll see Cal's boat with four people, Ollie the dog, and ballast loaded. The swim step is completely submerged and the water is hitting the chine forward of where the tower attaches to the front of the boat. Next picture is Aaron's S22 with four people and stock ballast loaded. Swim step is exposed and water hits the chine at the engine location.

Though for the record, that photo is only with the rear ballast filled.  When we really wanted it big (which was rare... we usually had enough people not to worry -- the wake was fine) we would fill two Fly High v-drive sacks, one on either side of the engine, and a ~300lb. bag in the center walkway.  Only did it a handful of times, but the wake was ridiculous.  At that point, the boat really needed more weight up front... the wake will get a little bit washy.

I thought those pictures were of you both loaded up. That's pretty good with just the one sack in back because Hanna and Ollie don't weigh that much! It's pretty level too. Was all the beer up front? Aaron's ballast must have been empty in that shot of his boat.

Yep, just the rear ballast was full.  It's a big sack though -- my guess is around 800 lbs, so it will sink the boat pretty well.  It fills the entire compartment...  I'm actually really surprised that nobody has sent me a PM to get the sizing information -- it was only about $300 to do and the extra weight is well worth it.
