Bought a new 2001 SX this summer. New to the Forum
« on: July 07, 2013, 00:59:52 am »
We upgraded from a Bayliner Capri to an SX22 this summer.  Had the boat re-upholstered and took in out last weekend.  Loved the boat seating, storage and style but didn't really get to run the boat to its limit as we noticed we were taking on water and the bilge pump was constantly pumping water out.  Started to notice we were getting lower in the water and the boat became sluggish.  We pulled the boat out of the water and noticed water gushing from the ballast intake valve.  Took it into the shop and we need two new ballast pumps and a new prop.  Looking forward to taking it out next weekend to really see what it can do.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the contributors to this site.  It was a great resource when we were looking at buying an Epic and I even used it out on the lake on my Iphone to try to find a fix to my water intake problem.

Looks great!  The carpet looks new as well.  Did they pull up the old carpet and is the new carpet snap in?

Nice boat indeed -- Question: What is the display below that dash? I have not seen that before on an Epic boat.

It's just an after market "perfect Pass" unit.   Haven't had the chance to check it out and see if/how it works yet.

Picking up the boat at the shop.  Turns out both of the ballast pumps were shot and one was stuck open and letting water come in.  $49 X 2 + service = $350.  But it turned out my prop was pretty bent up as well so I got the ACME prop everyone on the forum has talked about.  Looking forward to taking it out on the lake this weekend and see what kind of a boat this Toyota really is.  Everytime I think I made a mistake on upgrading to this boat, the people on this site who love their Epic and know a lot more than I do about boats make me feel better about it.  I'll update after the next time out.

It also looks like you have some extended size Bimini on the boat. Can you post some pics? I've been thinking about getting one of those.

The front carpet is glued down but the back carpet simply lays on top of the old.  Not the best but I don't see how else you could do it.  It's nice as you can just take it out and spray it down.  Negatives are that nothing is holding it down and it shifts around during use.

Update to the leaking problem.  To be honest, this boat has been a pain in the ass as it has been in the shop all summer and each time it's "fixed" we end up hauling it to the lake only to have to pull it off the water an hour or two later.  So, after giving up on the repair shop I was using (they didn't have a testing pool) my guy that did the upholstery said he used to be a mechanic and if I would give him a chance to fix it.  In one day, he found the leak from a cracked pipe from the exchanger (I think this is what he said) where the exhaust and water exit the boat (nearest part of the engine to the gas tank).  Since there is no part replacement, he took it to a shop where they repaired it.

Finally got an entire day out on the late and the boat ran great.  Top speed before was no more than 28 MPH and now the boat reaches a pretty scary 38-39 with WOT.   Too bad the summer is almost over.

Nice boat indeed -- Question: What is the display below that dash? I have not seen that before on an Epic boat.

Hey RobMickey, I'm playing catchup reading old posts, hope you are still around. Pretty snazzy upholstery, I think I will shy away from silver as my stock SX Lightning interior successfully lights my ass on fire after some time in the sun.

The heat exchanger is likely the one for the v drive (canister looking thing on top of v drive)there's one under the starboard side exhaust manifold as well for the transmission. This was a source of a leak on my SX, it was not winterized properly There is a 7/16 drain plug you can reach from the passenger compartment (along with the block drain on that side)

Both devices can rupture from bad winterization. I believe the transmission one is a Mercruiser part, can't confirm. Both can be repaired easily locally.
