Epic Purchase Question
« on: November 13, 2007, 06:40:13 am »
Here is a new question for everyone.  I am a single father of 2 and I love watersports.  I am considering purchasing a 2002 Epic but I have reservations about the fact that they aren't made anymore.  Do any of you anticipate having trouble getting parts in the future???  Also, is it hard to find someone to work on this boat where no dealers currently exist (I live in Montana so I am sure there are none in my area).  I know that Epics are great boats but any advice on these issues (and if you would purchase an Epic today) would be appreciated.  I know that they are great boats but I am worried about investing in one given the uncertainties.

Thanks!!     Sauce

Welcome to the site - we are glad you found us. This question has been asked many times by almost all of us. My recommendation would be to peruse the website or use appropriate search terms and you will find answers that support your intuition. In doiing so, you will get a better understanding of what a powerful resource this website can be. The boats are incredibly engineered, reliable and fuel efficient and have earned the extreme loyalty of their owners. Yes, there may be a time when new parts are hard to come by but that is way down the road and I suspect there will always be used parts available. All things considered (initial cost, depreciation, fuel, maintenance) I think your total cost of ownership will be less with an Epic than with most other boats while your pride factor will be much higher!
Don't be so humble, you're not that great.

I realize when a newbie hits search here it can be overwhelming so I will give you a jumpstart.

Check out these threads, most of your questions will probably be answered in them.

Many of us here are on our second (or THIRD hi bitzy) Epic boat, me included. I just couldn't justify the huge cost both operational and purchase price for a new boat when I was looking to upgrade last year. I bought a barely used 01 SX and couldn't be happier. I bought a new truck with what I saved:)

Maintenance is very low on these boats, I don't know of anyone on this side that hasn't been able to fix their boat, they don't break often but when they do it's usually something simple.

I am collecting new and used parts while they are available, there are only a couple things (besides trim/cosmetic) that are not the same as other inboards. Most stuff is off the shelf.

I love the fact that I use about 1/2 to 1/3 the gas of any comparable 22ft V drive. And that routine maintenance is at every 200 hrs instead of 50 hrs. It all adds up to more time on the water for me!

Hi Sauce,
I holiday each summer for a week or two in Montana... Bigfork area. What area are you in? As for answering your question, I am also on my second Toyota... really happy with it. After owning the first for a season, I began the search for a second as we wanted an open bow (big family). Miss some of the things on the closed bow like up front storage and I think the wake was a bit better for skiing, but needed the open bow and enjoy it. If I was buying a boat tomorrow to keep, I would still look for a deal on a Toyota. They do run for less and seem pretty straight forward if you have to tinker with anything on them. The guys that have been on this site for a long time have been so willing to help... no questions go unanswered it seems. My brother purchased a Tige and was calling me about winterizing as he cannot find a support site for his boat and has heard me brag about this one. Quality and build seem great. Here in Alberta we have the largest Mastercraft dealership, in North America I believe. The owner personally ran a Toyota boat until he got his dealership. Good boats... great online support. Chances are it will never go to the shop for any work.
