trans leak
« on: October 10, 2007, 21:54:53 pm »
I witerized and when I put on the transmission cap, it is leaking now.  I couldn't get it on by pushing it due to the seal wanting to come out, so I just tapped on it with a wood dowel, and rubber mallet.  Seamed to go on good, any sugestions.  Bart  Also Do i have to empty any water from the transmission during winterizing?

My guess is that your gasket isn't doing its job if you forced it on like that

I will quote myself since this was buried in an old service thread - basically you need the cap to squish the seal not just get the cap on there

That transmission cap is a pain in the arse.  The thing is supposed to sandwich the rubber gasket with the allen bolt on the top that should squish it until it is sealed tight.  The problem is that it is usually painted shut so the allen bolt wont turn without turning the whole cover.  Make that thing turn and you will be home free.  I wasted at least an hour before I figured that one out.

Hopefully you don't have any water in the trans.  Is it frothing up on you?  If so, change the fluid before you put it away.

Ok, that says alot.  My cap was painted.  Looked like one piece.  Any one have a new seal.  I think I may have damaged it by forcing it.  Any way, thanks Eagle WI.  Bart

Bart,

It does look like one piece - the first time I took the cap off it was cold and I got it back on.

I changed the fluid when it was warm out and there was no way - it took a good amount of head scratching before I figured it out that the allen bolt is the secret.

Just take the cap and gasket to an auto parts store and they should help you out.  It isn't anything super special and should be cheap.
