Capt Rick (or anyone else) HELP PLEASE!!
« on: February 25, 2008, 00:35:53 am »
Ok folks....here is my problem.  ???

I just took the boat out for the first time since I winterized in October (86 degrees in Tx).  After about 10 minutes the boat started to surge pretty bad.  I filled the tank up to full w/ super before I stored but I didn't "stabil" it.  Also, I didn't change the fuel/water separator yet (but have the new one ready to go).  Anyways, I stopped the boat and opened up the engine hood and was caught off-gaurd by what I found.  Water all over my engine!  I decided to start the boat with the hood open to see if I could figure out where the water was coming from.  I found it allright.  The "water outlet" ( the piece that looks like an upside down "Y") that has a hose that goes to each of the manifolds, had a hole the size of a pencil through it.  Water would spray out all over the place. This is the same piece, that if removed, the thermostat is behind.  I decided to patch the hole with some misc materials and drive back to the dock.  Engine instruments remained normal, but boat would still surge ocassionally. (Temp 163, Oil Pres normal 80+, batt volt good).  Now I need to order that little housing piece but our TMS Parts list only allows for you to see the part #.  You can't add it to the basket to buy.  Anybody know how I can buy this piece.  Also, do you think the surging is related??  Thanks.  Clint.

Does anyone know if the surging would be related to the cracked water outlet housing?  Or is it most likely my gas?  Seems like gas from early Nov would still be good at the end of Feb.  I'm a little freaked about the problem really.  Hoping I didn't do any other wierd damage, although I think everything else is ok.  Engine limits seemed ok.

Yep, had that problem too.  It was plugs.  For $100 or so, it's worth a shot.

Thanks gents.  Just ordered my 8 plugs online.  I just went with the bosch platinum (w/ the 4 prongs on the end)  They were like 6.50 each for a gs400.  Sounds like the iridium ones are over-rated (according to folks on this site).  Do our plugs need to be changed every season?  I know for a fact that mine have not been changed in at least 3 years (if not longer).  Thnx.

Every two seasons is often enough.  I can't remember what was in my boat, but I want to say they were the factory Toyota Platinum ones.  They were awesome, but they certainly were not $6.50 each -- I think I paid $13/ea at the dealership.  It's also a good idea to carry a spare set, so that if you have the problem again you can rule out the plugs quickly.

Use standard denso's for a 2000 Toyota Tundra. There about $2.50 each at the dealerships. $20 compared to $100. It's really hard to beat that. As for platinum or iridium plugs, the only benefit is how long they last. But if they foul out or need to be changed every season why would you bother putting in 60,000 mile or even 120,000 mile plugs.  ???

Been using Tundra plugs for two seasons and still haven't had to change them ;D
