Right Impeller, Wrong Pump?
« on: August 20, 2007, 23:51:32 pm »
Is this the right pump to mate with 09-812B impeller (see pic)? Look at the vane curl, and compare it with the pictures posted with the Impeller replacement procedure. The procedure pump has a much tighter vane curl both in the pressure, and low pressure area's they're nearly bent over to 90 degrees. On the low pressure side of my pump the vane tips just kiss the cavity wall. I've had three new 812 impellers in my possession in the last three weeks; one from skidim, one spare from a friend with an Indmar Engine, and one directly from Capt Rick. All three are stamped Johnson 812 and are the same size; the torn one I removed is the same size. The part number stamped on the end plate of the pump is: 10-13208-01.  I spoke with Johnson Pumps, and they said this part number points to the run of pumps they did for Toyota. The bronze cavity is not scored. The pump does not leak. However it is not pumping the volume of water it should; these pumps should pump 20GPM. And mine is not even close. Does anyone know the actual cavity diameter across the low pressure (cylindrical) side?

From what Bt wrote on a previous post, it sounded like he possibly had a similar issue. But he didn't post the Jabsco impeller part number he ended up with.

Any help is appreciated,

That's the right impeller, at least for my 2000 E22. The vanes between 10 and 1 in your picture look a little too straight though compared to what mine were when I changed the impeller earlier this year. See if skidim has one 1/16 of an inch larger in diameter with the same center spline and height. Can you read any numbers on your old impeller?

Took this while putting together the annual v-drive maintenance instructions. Looks like it matches yours well. I think you're good.

The torn one I removed had the same Johnson 812 part number on it.

Derek, yes our impellers are close; not to split hairs, it appears your vanes have more curl then mine, especially on the low pressure side... which may not matter.

Has anyone had to remove broken impeller pieces from the engine? And where did they accumulate? I've pulled the thermostat, both hoses to the water jackets, both hoses on the water pump, both heater hoses, and the lower oil cooler hose, and there's no sign of any pieces, or blockage.
